Yeah idk if there's a person I know in real life whose opinions on film I take that seriously. I like having conversations with people about movies, but I just like different things than most of my friends at this point. That's okay.
I have one friend that I can talk to about movies. We have similar taste and watch mostly the same stuff. The rest of my friends barely watch movies at all.
I can definitely talk to my friends about movies, but I am typically the one showing them the dumb horror trash that I am into. I have a long running argument with my group text over how good the Irishman is. They all think it stunk.
My best friend who likes roughly 75% of what I tell him to watch told me he turned everybody wants some off after 30 minutes because he didn’t like it so I stopped recommending him movies because that’s absurd.
I'm pretty much the opposite of my friends. They are tremendously slow to watch movies that are released in theaters, but binge watch shows right when they hit streaming. Meanwhile, I see movies on day one and watch shows at a slow drip.
As always, it’s find a film critic whose opinion you respect. They see more movies and are able to give more context than your average YouTube critic whose frame of reference is likely the past 10-20 years of films. One place I never take seriously is Twitter. Truly, the worst place for opinions.
I can't explain my aversion to Youtube. I think it's largely an exhastion with amateurism. Youtube videos of people rambling. Podcasts of people rambling. Live streams of gaming with people rambling. TikToks of amateur theater kids mugging. Like, that's for me and my family or friends to do. If you want some of my finite time on this earth, I want to know you spent some time crafting what I'm experiencing. And written reviews from professionals are by far the most likely to deliver that.
Good critics expand my understanding of the work and medium they’re writing about, even if just through their personal perspective, whether or not I agree with everything they say. Even if I disagree with all of it.
i mean yeah i'm not really comfortable writing off criticism as a whole here on absolutepunk.net home of the young new england review
My bf loves long YouTube video essays. I don't at all, but sometimes they have interesting things to add, especially when it's clearly a passion project and something they care about deeply. My gripe is he'll put on an ending explained video and they don't explain the ending. They just summarize the movie. I watched the movie. I wanted an interpretation of what you think the ending or deeper themes in the film were and meant. Not just you giving me a summary without adding anything at all. Otherwise I'd look that up instead.
