You picked a good one. Probably the only stand up I’ve actually recommended to people in the last few years
I used to play guitar in the between sets band at comedy shows, and you’re gonna be shocked to hear when you’re on stage for every set, you’re in every set. Almost came to blows with Dane Cook on stage once tho that was fun i guess
It's more a question of how people spend their time. How well an activity fits into their current life situation and habitual behaviour formed from their past are going to the most impactful factors. Lack of familiarity with a mediums social infrastructure can be a barrier. If you're a film boy you already have taste and can recognise critics and outlets to help guide you. If you try getting into books it will be a while before you know who to trust, how to interupt reviews and where to look for new reads.
My mentor used to play in Sinbad’s band and Sinbad started telling this joke that my mentor was having a fling with his wife. That all stopped when an audience member got back stage and tried to beat the shit out of him
Amazing. The dane cook thing was similar fare, dragging me into every obvious sex drugs and rock n roll bit out there. At a chelsea peretti show he was dropping in on no less. Chelsea peretti is funny
I can attest to just not necessarily having the time to keep active on threads for everything I like. But I also agree with this generally.
I am much less interested in stand-up than I used to be, especially comedians that pride themselves on being "edgy truth tellers", but I LOVE Gary Gulman, John Mulaney, and Taylor Tomlinson.
A few years ago my friend took me to see Dan Cummins for his birthday. He is a huge fan of the LHOTL ripoff pod he does, but every single joke he prefaced with "man this is going to trigger some sensitive folks!". If you're gonna do edgy stuff then just do it, talking about how edgy your stuff is onstage is extremely hack.
It is fun to go to Letterboxd, sort all movies by popularity, and see what you haven't seen. My top four are two Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Coco.
