I'm not that into middle earth stuff. Like lord of the rings has covered my craving for that genre well enough

  2. The thing I hate most about telling people I don't watch GoT is them telling me that I need to give it another chance or that I didn't get far enough. Like they're the sole defender of GoT and no one else has ever tried to convince me. Can't a person just like, not really like something??

If I know you're a fan of fantasy, I'll probably say give it another chance, otherwise no need to.

I haven't seen it in years but I loved the shit out of Willow when I was younger. I feel the years between Willow and LOTR didn't have much going on for the fantasy genre. Nothing post LOTR has really scratched that itch.

Edit: Is there anyone here who doesn't like the show GoT but enjoys the books? I haven't read them but I like the whole low fantasy aspect in theory.

There is this weird defense when people find out someone is not interested or does not like something that they like. They take it as a personal insult, which is really only something you should do if you made the show or movie or song.

Books are very good. The show takes away a lot of great aspects from the books. The showrunners kind of missed the entire point actually haha

I just found out that they are making a Big Bang Theory spinoff. Things keep getting worse.

    Have you actually watched GoT?
I love Thw Sopranos, The Wire, and MM. Though nowhere near those, but GoT is very enjoyable.

I didn't watch it for years because I'm not into fantasy stuff. I was finally wore down by one of my best friends and she kept saying "You'll be hooked after one episode!!!"

I watched the first season over the course of a few nights and outside of a few moments, I didn't really care for it. When I told her and her friend one night my opinion of it, they essentially accused me of not liking it out of spite and that they would have rather me never watch it and not know if I'd like it or not than actually trying to get into it.

I know they're mainly joking, but it wouldn't surprise me if they actually felt that way.

Fantasy stuff, and really most genre stuff, comes with the disadvantage of having to build a world and a mythology when what most people care about are characters and their motivations. Something like the Sopranos has a specific concept (it is very specific to a racial group, a criminal underworld, and geography) but the average American already knows at least a little about the subject. When you get into things like Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter or Star Wars, you run the risk of getting weighed down by all the need to create rules and locations and ideas and philosophies that the Sopranos or Seinfeld or Pulp Fiction doesn't have to. It lends itself to contradictions in plot as time goes on and new powers and ideas are introduced in a way that does not really exist in realistic fiction. A lot of times these works can become engrossing for people who get lost in the world itself while the human element is not there. Avatar and Inception are two recent examples of that. By contrast, if you decide to start watching something like Moonlight or Before Sunrise, you don't need to be explained anything other than setting, which is done quickly and through visuals.

It is not to say that it can never work, though. Science fiction tends to get it right more often because their imagination is mostly confined to projecting a future Earth. The first two Star Wars films focus intently on a very human, albeit childish, story while most of the nerdy stuff takes over in the future films. Ridley Scott's original Alien could have been a murderer in another film, but his recent efforts to make a mythology out of it have been disastrous.

Agree along the lines of this. I don't so much hate the show as much as what it's done to modern culture. Beyond the bullshit alt-right garbage it even moreso panders to the apathetic conservative crowd (read: libertarians, whose other favorite show is probably Family Guy) by having its message at the end of the day of most of its episodes being "if you have an opinion, you're annoying". It tells the viewers that anyone who takes a side is wrong and is being disruptive and annoying to the Normal People who just want to live their lives in peace. The entire show is a Middle Ground fallacy and that's why it will forever be an unforgivable blight on entertainment.

Double posting to divide the topics.

I'm a very strange person for whatever reason because nine times out of ten, what I like most about fantasy and sci-fi is the worldbuilding itself. I find prequel-era Star Wars media entertaining because I actually do like hearing about the political clusterfuckery that went on in the Old Republic and the contorted web of confusion and deceit the Sith spun through this political system to bring about the Jedi's downfall. I love Two Towers the most out of all the LOTR films because that's when you finally get exposed to just how huge Middle-Earth is and the politics of the realm - who came from where, who wants who dead, who can Saruman rally against Rohan, who can Rohan call for aid, how much longer can Gondor last against its so many enemies, things like that. I guess I enjoy "dense" material such as that - maybe it's the history major in me talking, hah.

That being said, I definitely would not find these universes as entertaining I do if I didn't like the characters as well. It's a balancing act. Bad characters will ruin amazing worldbuilding, and terrible worldbuilding will ruin otherwise good characters.

I've watched every episode of Game of Thrones and I'm still not 'into it'. It's just so slow and boring. And yet when I suggest that to someone, they act like I just don't get it. No, I get it, 'it' just bores me. How they've dragged so many seasons out like they have seems kinda insulting to the audience.

Genuinely never thought I'd hear the show called slow, thats a new one. Boring is subjective but at the same time that leaves me thinking this type of story just isn't for you.
