Didn’t like The Good Place at first because it seemed like humor for people who call Wednesday “Winesday.” Ended up enjoying it and I think the ending is really poignant. It did itself some favors by just being a couple seasons.
With that said, I feel like I’ve completely soured on Kristen Bell and I say that as someone who loved her in Veronica Mars and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I kind of feel the same about her and Dax Shepard as I do the Smartless guys - Get out of doing every other ad on TV. You have enough money.
My exact feeling. I can't remember a single joke from Happy Endings. Just that I enjoyed it. New Girl has jokes emblazoned on the recesses of my brain
Wait, we dislike actors for...doing ads? Some of the things people make themselves care about just seem like too much work.
I’ll dislike someone for any reason I do not care. Also yes it sucks when celebrities constantly do ads because smaller actors could make a living off of doing ads before.
she has made the mistake of Talking Online one too many times. not a bad person or anything just kind of a weirdo where it’s like “why are you like this”
Celebrities doing ads is bad. They used to be too ashamed to do them in America so they would do them in Japan or other places. Ryan Reynolds does not need that cell phone money.
I really don’t give a shit who’s in an ad I’m exposed to, unless it’s someone I don’t like outside of the ad. Like, any time Ryan Reynolds pops up with one of those dang Mint Mobile or whatever ads, I’m like, go away, loser.
That Patrick Willems video about actors prioritizing personal celebrity brands over art a la Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson covers some of the issue I think. The more you see a public figure selling things to you, the less authentic and likable they seem imo. In a lot of ways the issue is that it’s harder for actors to make a living off just acting in the current landscape so it’s hard to blame some people trying to maintain their home and family and all that.
I read an article this past week talking about this through the lens of Sydney Sweeney (I believe it was a couple years old, but reshared while people on weirdly fixated on her), that I thought was generally a good perspective. Some of that sponsorship thing is tied to, like, the lack of residuals, etc. Also yeah, that was a great Willems video, in a particularly hot streak of Willems videos in the back half of last year.
I’m sure Ryan Reynolds and Sydney Sweeney are fine but the working commercials actors that don’t get those gigs anymore aren’t.
Big stars don’t need defended, lol, but like… I think fixating on actors instead of the larger systemic issues in these creative industries is pretty silly & misplaced. (Except Ryan Reynolds, because I personally find his whole brand and whatnot deeply annoying!)
Sure, but part of the fun of conversations is that they can branch off and evolve as they go on, lol. I do fully support you in this, though:
the only celeb ads I find immoral are like sports betting and Bitcoin and anything else where a millionaire is gonna get someone fucked over with a scam
