I remember trying to rent Varsity Blues and trying to come up with a lie for why it was rated R. Same for trying to get my mom to buy a ticket for American Pie.
David O Rusell tried it with American Hustle and everyone was like “no thank you” and then he went away
Instead, he kinda became (to use nerd references I know Kevin would appreciate) Reverse Scorsese, or Bizarro Scorsese, lol.
I’d have to read that article to understand what point he’s getting at. I can’t think of anything about Smith (especially at that point in his career) that mimics Scorsese’s work.
It's wild that Kevin Smith was an indie darling who's responsible for Good Will Hunting being made because Ben Affleck was his buddy
The other directors written about in the Next Scorsese article are Wes Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson, the Wachowskis, David O. Russell, and Alexander Payne. I have to subscribe to Esquire to read it and I don't want to do that.
In 2000 PTA should have been the obvious choice because of how transparent a Marty rip-off Boogie Nights is. Luckily it’s still weird as hell and he got weirder
i remember listening to the Boogie Nights dvd commentary and PTA said her understood the Scorsese comparison he got in the press but stated his biggest influence as a director is Johnathon Demme
God, Manhunter fucking rules. I remember being a kid on the IMDB message boards and seeing everyone there shit on it because it was "80s" or something and horrible compared to Silence of the Lambs. The opening shot on the beach is one of the more captivating images I've seen in modern film. Mann is a master.
i will say, in regards of kevin smith/marty, the zack and miri pixies music cue was more effective for me than the 100 different rolling stones cues in marty's movies
American Hustle vs. The Wolf of Wall Street was a real debate in 2013, and a lot of people chose poorly.
Aside from Three Kings (which I haven't seen in 15 years probably), Russell is maybe my least favorite (popular) director.
He was on a roll of shitty overhyped movies for 5 years straight there. Kind of him to go into self imposed exile after Joy
I saw Heat for the first time in my late 20s and loved it and it was before Public Enemies came out so I was hyped for it but then really underwhelmed
I just recently watched Collateral for the first time since I was a teenager and goddamn is it amazing. Apparently Mann tried to get Sandler in Jamie Foxx’s role, which would have made it the greatest film ever
