I’m not going to bat for Disney. But to say it’s ghoulish is kind of misleading. I consider that to be the case with Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One. But not really here. Will they do it again? Probably. Will it be ghoulish? I have no reason to think otherwise. But if Hamill is on board, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it, other than it looking weird.
That Kevin Smith IG post, like most things Kevin Smith in the past decade, is so incredibly embarrassing.
Has the quality of a director's work ever plummeted so quickly and drastically as Kevin Smith after like 2008?
Kevin Smith has always been bad. I remember freshman year of college a bunch of us huddled around watching Clerks on a laptop. It was revelatory to almost everyone else but I wanted to escape so badly.
Patrick Willems (one of the very few people who makes YouTube video essays that I actually like to watch) recently did a pretty good video about Kevin Smith. I personally dig some of his stuff a decent bit, but I also came to him late enough to have never had him in the “good filmmaker” category of my brain; he’s just a nerd whose nerd shit I, as a nerd, sometimes dig.
he's a decent writer with some unique charms but always been a bad director. He seems like a nice, genuine, strange man so while it's easy to dunk on many things he does, I don't begrudge him anything. Unreal that Vilmos Zsigmond shot Jersey Girl, though.
I admire his business savvy. The Jay and Silent Bob Reboot is an awful movie where he’s just paying tribute to himself. It’s basically tailor-made for him to take it on the road and overcharge fans to watch it with him, which he did and sold out like every show. Good on him. He seems like a nice enough guy. Related: shit like “This NERD THING made me cry” is the worst. I hate that that’s some sort of badge of honor. It’s perfectly normal to cry during whatever touches you emotionally.
I was watching good movies in high school. Maybe it would have had more of an impact if I'd seen it earlier.
Clerks, mallrats, chasing Amy, dogms, and as a younger person I thought original Jay and silent Bob was hilarious. Zach and miri was fine enough. Yoga hosers could've been something because I loved the two girls characters...there was definitely a movie there. That's a decent enough filmography for me.
Shit I think I saw it in like 7th grade. I remember asking my parents for the Clerks X DVD and having to explain that it was not porn. Also I wanted Rancid’s “And Out Come the Wolves” and my grandmom didn’t like the mohawk on the cover
Kev seems like a genuinely good dude. Clerks was a foundational movie for me and I still genuinely enjoy it. The rest are fine to varying degrees until around Clerks 2 (which is good too). I haven’t seen Zak and Miri.
