It got generally favorable reviews when it came out, but I feel like a lot of people saw it as obnoxiously self-indulgent and overrated. And people hate that it focused so much on character who, for much of the movie, is a complete asshole. I don't remember if that kind of discourse was from here, twitter, or reading reviews. Good to know other people love it like I do!
One of the things it really gets right is that they clearly have a fondness for the biopics that they are sending up, and it actually works as a biopic on its own. Even the fake songs are well done.
Yeah, coming off of a decade of "Reference Movie" parodies, it was a nice throwback to the days of the Zuckers.
They are making me teach a worker safety class this year (which I am completely unqualified for), so I used the scene where Dewey's brother cuts himself in half as a warning about playing around on jobsites.
They made arguably the most well-received non-original trilogy part of Star Wars, lost the license, and then decided to make up their own universe which has much more interesting lore than a decades-long series. There are so many sub-stories that are more interesting than full games; the salarians committing the krogan to extinction, the geth-quarian war, the ways that biotics are exploited by society, the MAGA pro-fascist Cerberus group.
My interest in Walk Hard was piqued a few years after the movie actually came out when I heard Let's Duet on the radio. Gradually realizing the song was a joke was an enjoyable moment.
