The Squid and the Whale, Adventureland, the Social Network, Zombieland, and Night Moves is a solid top 5. Haven't seen the Art of Self Defense.
Kind of reminded me, not sure if this is an unpopular opinion but Ryan Reynolds is almost aggressively unfunny to me. That stupid fucking voice he does every time he's trying to be funny is so grating
The people who praised Deadpool around its release were insufferable. Like yes it has swearing, gore, and meta humor. Such a advancement for the super hero genre.
Ryan Reynolds is the rare actor that has never been in a good movie. Even Jared Leto managed to show up in The Thin Red Line.
I liked him in Buried, the Proposal, Definitely Maybe, and Adventureland. I liked Van Wilder when I was 12 but can’t imagine I still would. Most of his recent roles seem to fall in line with the schtick/persona he‘s known for and that’s boring. I wouldn’t say he’s bad at it though, just that most of the movies seem bad.
The second Deadpool is decent if you have nostalgia for Rob Liefeld's original X-Force comics. But, yeah, the character & films are often grating in that try hard, “you know that’s funny!” kinda way. Feel like Deadpool is in some ways the comedic counterpoint to Joker? Not 100% sure what I mean by that, but it just sounds right in my head.
This is such a stupid thing to say. “I like something so anyone else who doesn’t is trying to be cool!”
I would never watch a Deadpool movie but it feels like the equivalent of teenagers who curse loudly around children.
I think Coming Soon is the only thing I’ve seen him in where I didn’t dislike his character intensely, and his facial hair tried very hard to make me.
“OMGGG that comic book character said the F word!!1!!1! What will come out of his salty mouth next?!?! “
"Adventureland" and "Definitely Maybe" are both very enjoyable. And he seems like a nice guy besides the whole getting married on a plantation thing. But he's had the same schtick for 20 years and has starred in some of the worst comedies ever made ("Waiting," "Van Wilder," "The Change-Up," "RIPD"). He lucked into getting "Deadpool" to re-start his career and has been coasting ever since.
Everyone saying that you had to watch Waiting because it was just like working in a restaurant was a rough time.
It is a blink and you miss it performance. I don't think I even knew he was in it until I was reading about the cast of the movie.
