Maybe it just seems so tropey and cliched cause it created all those cliches? But I also found the acting pretty terrible, plus the most obvious one dimensional female character ever
I grew up on the Rocky movies but when I re-watched the first one a few years ago, I had a newfound respect for it. Stallone went on to a successful career playing a one-dimensional action hero. And even in his breakout role in the first Rocky, you could dismiss it as a dumb, inarticulate tough guy that could barely act. But keep in mind Stallone created that story and wrote the screenplay (though he based it on Chuck Wepner). There's a subtleness to his performance in that first one that makes you think he's successfully acting that dimwitted yet good-hearted. Not to mention John Alvidson's direction and its terrific editing that culminates in the title match. It went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars in one of the most arguably toughest competitions in retrospect (it beat out Taxi Driver, Network, and All The President's Men). The sequels had a more mainstream feel but the first one is a perfect entry in the New Hollywood era of the 1970's.
This is the place for it, but what a weird conversation. The Rocky series is one of the best to ever come out. The first few are classics and the most recent two (I do count Creed) were amazing.
Rocky 6 came out of nowhere for me when I wasn't expecting it to be any good. I think that one may be my fav, but the original and Creed are up there as well.
The first Rocky is much more of a social realist drama than a sports film to me. Either way, it's pretty good, though I think Creed is probably the best of the bunch, and in hindsight was probably my favorite movie of that year - it gave me everything I didn't realize I'd wanted. Halloween is still not great, though. I mean, I can appreciate that it was the first film of its kind to do a lot of the things that it did, but maaaannnn, it has not aged well at all. I remember getting like an hour into with with my brother and dad and each of us looking at each other like, 'Is this supposed to be scary?'
I've gone to the theater just to buy the popcorn In fairness, my local theater sells giant take home bags of popcorn that are only 10 bucks and probably hold like 2.5-3 large bags in it. I normally pop my own popcorn but there's nothing like the stuff straight from the theater
There are movies that I have been on the fence about going to a theater to see but getting popcorn pushed me there.
I find popcorn often smells better than it tastes, and to justify the prices they give you enough for like 5 people, I only get it once in a while
I never really get anything to eat at the movies because I can go two hours without eating when I'm anywhere else
sour patch kids + medium (aka xtra large) diet coke..... almost every time (my bodily insides are awesome?)
Tim Burton and Wes Anderson get too much flack for having distinctive styles, not saying there aren't bad Tim Burton movies, and that both could use a bit more diversity in their films
