I've gone back and forth on this for years. Got into them right after TOCS came out, heard the leaked demos of define and picked it up on release day, loved the rollout of LITSOS, first real show I went to was the LITSOS tour, and after Aaron left I had a hard time getting into Disambiguation. I think I definitely appreciate them all for different reasons. The most creative they have ever been was during Disambiguation, but Define came out of left field and blindsided fans, and then with LITSOS, they took that same sound and made it more anthemic and darker in some parts.

"the best they've ever been" can be relative, but behind the scenes, during the end of the LITSOS era, shit was falling apart.

I've decided that I can't rank them, and that's ok. I appreciate them all equally. I wish we got more stuff with Daniel because he just brought a new level of creativity that was so fresh combined with the darker sound the band was aiming for at the time.

Although I like the new music they have been putting out as of late, Erase Me was mostly a trainwreck. The new radio rock sound is not what most long time fans want to hear, but I do understand there is a whole new generation of fans gobbling that up.

In reality, this band has now three eras of the band sounding different. The first fans got the thrash metal, the second wave fans got the emo/hardcore side, and now this third wave gets the rock/hardcore version.

LITSOS and Disambiguation are their best easily.

Define the Great Line is easily their peak for me. The perfect mix of their catchy and heavy attributes.

I'm not being critical of anyone here but I really wish Disambiguation got the love it deserves when it came out instead of like, 13 years later. I know some of it just has to do with my local scene sucking at the time but I knew so many people who absolutely refused to give it a chance just because Aaron wasn't on it and they played to maybe 20 people when the Illuminatour came here. They still played as if they were playing to thousands but seeing such a steep drop was so fucking depressing

Same! they played this seedy dirty club here in Manchester, NH and I didn't even go because of a prior commitment. They might have played to 100 people that night. Kicking myself ever since.

I still think about missing that show as well. Pretty sure the club has been long gone since (Rocko's I think?).

LITSOS and Disambiguation to me are transcending the scene and being full on avant garde in a genre that this kind of music couldn’t have been imaginable before. I think DTGL was the breaking the damn and then these records were the flood.

The post Christian tone of Underoath is whatever to me, I just think the lyrics are tired at this point. Much prefer the Thrice route of going deeper and finding broader spirituality beyond the very limited and black and white religious ideas to completely rejecting everything and being pissed about it. IMO being so pissed for so long is the other side of the same coin of intolerance. Also I personally think Spencer is a better lyricist when he evocative and using imagery vs explicitly talking about things literally.

i've thought the latter part for a while. it's alright to feel better about your religious upbringing, but that bitterness shouldn't be a final resting place for your feelings. either move on and sing about something else or find a way to make peace with it.

That’s prob the biggest change for me. Lyrically just so much more boring than previous output.

would love to be wrong when the whole thing comes out.

I do feel like the last 3 singles they put out were at least starting to move away from the constant "religion bad!!!" shit that took up the majority of Erase Me and Voyeurist

I ended up not going to the Denver shows and it looks like they just did the greatest hits encore. Such a bummer the way it panned out. Maybe next time they just go MWY style and say you’ll never hear the same encore twice but it will be rad and full of deep cuts.

I remember going to shows at Rockos back in the day. A lot of great shows but I’ll never forget the story of somone who literally got stabbed and died in the bar in the basement.

No One has commented on how lol it is they’re doing Papa Roach and within a week they announced how incredible it is they’re doing a run with AOF??? It is so funny that their direct support is continually funny and the co headliners / openers are amazing. Good on them for broadening their audience with these arena shows but they’re so funny to their die hard audience.
