Just got my boxset today. Not sure if i'll be spinning any of them tonight, but will report back when I spin TOCS.
I’ve been emailing extensively with the manager who handled this for the band. I had the same issue with TOCS skipping. As stated by someone else, this is the only record out of the 200 some-odd records in my collection that has this issue on my turntable. He basically told me there was nothing he could do cause it plays on some record players and assured me they would never again be using that pressing plant. While it’s not his fault or the bands fault, it’s fucked and I’m definitely pissed about how it turned out. I’ve written a scathing email to pressing plant about this but then someone passed along the owners email so I’m going to be sending one directly to the owner too. I’d take my money back for TOCS at this point.
alright so, just played through TOCS. very noticeable skipping on Dangerous Business, and mostly every other song has minor skips here and there. It’s not unplayable, but its noticeable.
Man, I’m so bummed for everyone who’s experiencing the skipping issue. Like I mentioned earlier, if you paid with a credit card - you can always call your credit card company and do a charge back. I hate to screw over the band (although I hope the pressing plant ends up being the ones who take the hit) but we waited for almost a whole year now for a record that skips? Fuck that.
I bought the box, so idk how a chargeback would work in that situation, in reality i will very likely play DTGL and LITSOS way more often, but, it is a bummer all around *especially* if you only bought TOCS.
You could make the argument that you did not get the goods you paid for.. which is a working record after almost a year of waiting. Plus if you emailed transmissions@observatory and the manager was like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ then the credit card may side with you. All I will say is that I’ve worked as a Risk analyst before for a financial company and I’ve seen crazier chargebacks go through.
I only ordered TOCS so I'm hoping I get lucky and mine plays fine, but I'm not holding my breath, haha. Still haven't received any kind of shipping confirmation for the record though, so who knows... Maybe I'll just never get it and my life will continue TOCS-free and I'll be able to one day tell my grandkids about how I once ordered a record that I never received.
almost done with it (TOCS). the only problems i've noticed are a slight bit of distortion on parts of side B. any skipping on my end is due to the fact that my tracking force is set to 1.5g so there's the possibility of the needle jumping if i move too hard. there's also a slight defect on the outer lid of the box to where it's not perfectly parallel with the rest of it, but aside from that, no serious issues.
one more note: not only is the mastering kinda compressed on LITS, but the packaging is incorrect re: how many tracks are on each side. side A has 5 while side B has 6. on the original 12", it was 6 A/5 B. no clue why they changed it for this version.
The quality of your record player will be the deciding factor according to the pressing plant. Just hope you don’t have what they are deeming a “cheap” turntable.
yeah i mean, i'm running an AT LP120, i'm not rocking a Crosley suitcase player, and it still skips, so they can miss me with record player shaming the buyer. To those who are rocking a Crosley suitcase player, no hate, but if you can afford to upgrade eventually I would, there is documented cases of their hardware messing up people's records.
I just got that same email and mine was delivered on Saturday too LOL. I have a friend with an exquisite record collection that he spent a lot of money on... and yet he plays them on a Crosley. I know for a fact that some of his records were messed up by that player.
I must've gotten lucky, because I didn't hear a single flaw in TOCS. With that said, I'm going to be spinning the other two this week to make sure there's no issues those either. Don't exactly trust this pressing plant after all the bad things I heard about this rollout.
Damn, I have an AT LP120 too so that makes me bummed for whenever the record comes.. if it ever comes?
Denon DP-300F here. Haven't had the slightest bit of issue with any record I've thrown at it. Will report back if/when I ever receive my set.
Yeah the response the plant gave via the band manager was pretty condescending, talking me to me like it's the first record I've ever bought and tried to play. Still haven't gotten a response back after I e-mailed them directly.
