they aren't really part of the school of metalcore i was thinking of. more along the lines of like crown the empire, memphis may fire, etc..
As someone who grew up very similarly to the guys in the band it seems with an evangelical/Christian upbringing, it’s very disheartening to me to see the way they’ve gone. I definitely have deconstructed my faith and gone in a direction in my life, but I feel like the way they’ve left their “Christianity” has been childish/immature. like have I been hurt by the church/religion? Yeah, but I feel like it’s a lot more nuanced than “religion bad” there’s so many artists/bands who have said important things or written very deeply nuanced lyrics without bashing Christianity. It feels like it’s come across as a gimmick being such in the limelight as a hugely successful Christian alternative band. I grew up as a T&N kid and I felt so seen/heard by those bands because I didn’t feel alone in the faith I had. Just a rant after these the last two records and seeing the James stuff go down/touring with FIR
Feel like I’m on the opposite end. Their lyrics have really hit me in the right spot with their last two albums. Especially tracks like “We’re All Gonna Die,” that one really resonated with me. But I understand it feeling gross to others. I’ve also appreciated their recent talk about religion. Spencer, at least lately, seems to talk more about how he was impacted by the Christian community rather than bashing the religion as a whole. I can’t really touch on reviews from right when they reunited though.
Yep, also I personally think a lot of people have trauma and negative experiences tied to their faith, and I don’t really think it’s my place to say they’re being “fake” or whatever by moving so strongly away from Christianity. I personally moved pretty strongly away from the church when I was younger and have come to a more nuanced view of religion (while still not practicing) in recent years, so I guess I kind of understand where Spencer is coming from.
New song lifeline (drowning) coming soon according to an update to their vip packages for the summer tour
If it's the one they were playing the demo of on their most recent tour/VIP experience, then it's an absolute ripper. It's Spencer heavy and some fast Oath.
I've been itching to hear the song that they played the demo of during VIP. It gave me LITSOS vibes. I hope "Drowning" scratches the itch. I also sold off a large number of my Underoath vinyl. I had pretty much every variant of every album and then they did the whole NFT thing. Then they kicked James out. So... Fool me once, strike one, fool me twice, strike three you're out.
As much as i loathe all of their recent decisions, I am still curious what new music is gonna sound like. Having said that, I think i'll just be a casual fan moving foward. No more shows/merch/vinyl, but i'll still check out the music.
Whoa. The new single chorus is super SUPER catchy. Underoath - Lifeline (Drowning) | TikTok I keep singing “feels like I’m drownin’ ….. in my sleep”
Sounds like Bring Me The Horizon Call me cynical but wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a very intentional move, given BMTH’s continued massive success
Kind of actually sounds like Drown, which isn’t a totally bad thing, that’s one of the best BMTH songs.
You're able to listen to this through the link they just tweeted. The verses are underwhelming but holy heck that chorus sounds great. The ending is pretty redeeming for a song that seems to fall short in structure. Seems like this is definitely a more "accessible" take from them to try and get on that alternative spotlight similar to BMTH like others have mentioned. Additionally, I think this is a way better attempt of accessibility than Rapture was. I can definitely see this being on repeat this summer for me.
