Haven't been able to get much into their new stuff since they returned, but I am enjoying this new track.
New track is good but I don't get the LITSOS comparisons (that's my favorite UO album). It's somewhere between Voeyurist and Erase Me, which is fine. I don't like it more than anything on Voyeurist but I like it more than anything on Erase Me.
I like the return of some sludgier guitar work but I’m always put off a bit by Spencer’s more shout-y vocals so I wish those weren’t featured so heavily. Still, good song. Still well in form. feels so strange to have a new song so quickly!
Yeah I'm getting sick of Spencer's shouty vocals (I don't want to hear his actual high pitch voice when he screams) and just want more solid screams but this is still really good, easily as good as the tracks on Vouyerist
I fear we are going to be with the shouty vocals from here on out. If I'm remembering correctly, he stated he wanted to move away from the 100% screaming style and balance more of a singing which is where we're getting this in between scream/sing shout.
I mean I can't argue looking back at their catalog which is filled with amazing contrast of lofty Aaron cleans with Spencer harsh screams. Just really hope they continue finding a good balance of vocal duties similar to Voyeurist because I thought it worked well and was way better than Erase Me.
Haha I'm probably just being overly harsh, I just find Spencer's voice very grating at times, hurts my ears sometimes.
yeah i just remember him and Aaron doing an acoustic performance for a radio show during Erase Me and they were both really bad haha
Definitely not going to say Spencer is a good singer but I do really like his singing voice. I might be one of the few that love Erase Me so I'm totally fine with this direction
I’m apart of the disambiguation supremacy camp so I’ve always been a huge fan of Spencer’s different vocal styles but I understand the pushback
As with the shouting, I’m even less of a fan of Spencer’s singing voice but if that’s what he wants and if that’s what we need for the band to go on, then so be it, they’re still good songs and I appreciate him trying to balance screaming and singing in a sustainable way. Still, it’s an even more palatable transition for us if they continue to find ways to compensate throughout the rest of the song - fresh song structures, interesting guitars and synth, balance with Aaron, etc. So far not *too* much to complain about on that front. Feels silly to complain being only a year removed from a fantastic return to form but somehow band’s getting away from screaming never gets easier.
I like this, and the musicianship is great - love the guitars. Not sure I'd take it over Voyeurist stuff, though. Anyone know if this is a one-off/label intro or is it intended as a lead single for a new record?
I think there’s been several quotes citing that they had been in writing/record mode, but I feel like there’s usually more direct implication the record is following/attached to the single release.
Just finished up VIP •James wasn’t present and I think he’s not on this tour routing (I believe for personal reasons so I didn’t push hard on the questioning) •They played about 6 or 7 demos over a large speaker with 3 of them being new songs and one of which was an absolute RIPPER that Spencer kills it on. Definitely will be on the upcoming whatever •Asked if it was a new EP or album and Tim said “whatever we want!” and I didn’t want to push too hard on asking that either •Got some more records signed so that was coo
new song is sick! i think this is a great direction for them to go after the last couple of albums. sounds like they are finally nailing what they've been going for and doing it well!
Hope James is all good. Everyone in the band is so incredibly kind and fun to talk to, but I was struck by how great he was when I did the VIP thing during the Erase Me cycle. He was the last band member I got to just as things were winding down, and I just remember I was kind of starting to walk toward him and he opened stride and walked right over to me with his hand out, introduced himself, and led a really cool, laid back and comfortable conversation where he seemed so genuinely interested to be talking to me. Great dude.
Also was kind of a weird night a show. Loathe only played 1 song because they got stuck in traffic and then they were having trouble with their sound and house engineers. UØ played 15 songs straight and no encore at all. Spencer and Aaron’s mic’s had issues at one point and so did Grant’s bass. This is my 4th time seeing them since the reunion and EVERY time I think Aaron’s mic needs to be turned up like 30% more in the live mix. So hard to hear him.
