I'm unsure gun to head I could tell you any Underoath lyrics except a few from TOCS that have become sorta scene memes.
anyway about halfway in and this is easily on the level of disambiguation and LISTSOS just in terms of how much i like it and the sonic world it inhabits. fucking amazing shit going on here. i thought erase me was a huge fucking disappointment so im very, very glad to be loving this band again.
Agreed just an interesting concept based on your thoughts. They've distanced themselves pretty heavily at this point
Underoath lyrics were always just... there, not really good or bad, but also not distracting, which I feel like the ones on Voyeurist are at times, in a bad way. "My knuckles have turned to white, there's no turning back tonight. Kiss me one last time" "When this thing breaks, I will be you, you will be me. Let's hope this is short lived and riddled with disease" Also I just double checked lyrics on Google and is Aaron really saying "riddled with dizzy"? Always thought it was disease
yeah after the singles i thought i was gonna have more fun with this. hopefully second listen goes better.
don't forget when ABBRLIBAY was originally gonna say "i always knew you were, such a sucker for that whore"
well yeah, that's been talked about a lot as being one of their worst lyrics. It goes back to what @sophos34 was saying earlier about one liners from the early 2000s, but that one was obviously in worse taste than a lot of the others.
dig a lot of lyrics surrounding losing faith/being expected to conform to the church, massively relatable
....I guess now's not the time to say how much I love "you wanna see me disappear, well so do I, so do I" on There Could Be Nothing After This lol I'm a sucker for edgy shit that's not like, misogynistic (which of course is steeped in the scene and with the aforementioned ABBRLIBAW). I've pretty much generally enjoyed Underoath's lyrics, that being said Disambiguation lyrics are probably on another level compared to their other stuff for me
I so want to see this whole album live in a music venue and aggressively stand still in the back with a cold and bitter tasting beer as I’d be way too afraid to wreck my body in the pit at this point. But yeah I’d really like to see a crowd go wild to We’re All Gonna Die, Damn Excuses or Cycle.
p sure they recorded an acoustic version of the song recently and actually sang the line like that and I just was entirely perplexed by that choice lol anyway, yeah, UO lyrics have never been anything to write home about to say the least. honestly tho I’m very much not a lyrically oriented listener and so unless they’re like reprehensible levels of bad, or the vocals are too prominent in the mix to tune out what is being said, I will often go years sometimes without knowing the lyrics to even songs I absolutely love. there are definitely exceptions but I can’t really tell you there’s a rhyme or reason to what compels me to pay attention to or put more stock into some bands lyrics more than others.
I love how haunting this album presents as. It's a musical delight for people who are exvangelical, in pain, or just need that validation they aren't alone in being perpetually pissed at the white evangelical institutions. Sonically, this is my favorite album since Disambiguation, without question. It just hits all the right beats for me. Oh! And my vinyl showed up today! I totally forgot I ordered a copy. Green Smoke variant.
I can understand lyrics questioning faith/anger towards organized religion, but blatant, f you and your god, we're all going to hell and im dragging you with me, etc. do not do it for me. at all. it didnt when BMTH did it 10-15 years ago, it doesnt now. deconstructing faith and an album that thoughtfully presents those concepts can be very powerful and moving. I think the most recent Valleyheart album nails that entirely.
I hated Erase Me to the point where this band completely fell off my listening radar. This is a massive return to form for me. Thoroughly enjoying my first listen of this.
