I love Disambiguation but I don't think I'd have it as high on my list as others have it... Voyeurist is easily their best for me but that's also the first album I heard from the band so I'm a bit biased
I recognize where the quality is actually better vs other records for them, but I match Nate 100% when it comes to the order I reach for them. (listen to more Silent Planet if you don’t)
My 2nd thru 5th all swap depending on the day but the challenge for me with TOCS is I wanna say all its successors are better if you take out nostalgia, but when you listen to it it really just is that good. Dated for sure but the guitars are fun as hell and the lyrics are unique. There’s nothing to critique.
TOCS has it's stranglehold on me due to it's nostalgia and iconic-ness, but I think it's truly towards the end of the rankings for me at this point. DTGL and LITSOS are always fighting for top spot in my mind, but I think it boils down to DTGL having better stand-alone songs and LITSOS being a better encompassing album as a whole. Mount Rushmore would be DTGL, LITSOS, Disambig, and Voyeurist at this point for me on this 233rd day of 2024.
Honestly I only like TOCS more with time. When Voyeurist came out I probably would have put it higher but I just think the songs are better as a whole on TOCS.
I have never actually enjoyed TOCS, I just tolerate it. I don't have any nostalgia tho cause I started with LITSOS (and Disambiguation was already out at the time). I think TOCS has the thinnest guitar tones, weakest vocals, and weakest songwriting by far (yes, I prefer more songs on Erase Me although it has my least favorite Underoath tracks). No shade but it would be dead last in my rankings and it makes me sad that it's all the bulk of their fanbase wants to hear.
