I think so, sure would be nice if we heard more than Breathing/singles live sometimes!

Happy for anyone who enjoys this and if this is what Underoath wanted to make then good for them, but this is a big swing and a miss for me.

    Ron Iver.

Held off till this morning to hit play on a long run because @ChampsMusic said so.

Ronald’s hot take. This is the most cohesive album the four writing members have ever made where each member has an equal expression of their POV on every song. Tim’s heavy guitars are so present but somehow do not stick out or feel forced at all. Chris’s parts are through the roof. Aaron’s drum parts are his best since the reunion. His poppy vocals are so damn catchy. You can hear how confident he is in giving the song what it needs lyrically from all his pop production (if you haven’t heard his record with Lauran Hibberd you must check it out) Spencer has some really killer heavy vocals, and his poppier more melodic stuff is much better on here than the previous attempt on Erase Me.

I’m partial to UO swinging for Scene Avant Garde from the lost / disambiguation era, but this record is rad. There are parts that are so strange and have no business working, but they’re just so damn catchy like all the love is gone or teeth.

Shame is top tier UO for me. There’s one song on every post hiatus record that gets me and immediately sticks out. No Frame & Pneumonia were the song of the album for me , and Shame had me vibing big time on my run. that intro is so sick. Devil and Loss are also killer. The run from Generation to Shame is pretty relentless. All the singles are cooler in the context of the album.

I have some gripes. Spencer’s lyrics are a low point for me. the post christian grouchiness is very tired (fuck you im enough smh). The way they intentionally released singles that would “piss fans off” is silly imo. Just be about your vision if you’re about it. lol we get it you do whatever you want the “hehehe we gotcha” energy is lame. overall though if i just hit play and enjoy it this album whoops ass. Very special band that has no business going this hard this deep in their career.

I agree with pretty much all of that. Pleasantly surprised by the instrumental music, but the lyrics just have no impact on me at all.

On my second listen now and I definitely like this, though I think I will ultimately still prefer Voyeurist.

I don't know how much overlap there is between Underoath and The 1975 listeners, but Aaron's pre-chorus/refrain on "Shame" sounds exactly like "I Like America & America Likes Me." I can't unhear it.

Also, "fuck you, I'm enough" is probably the most unfortunate moment of the band's entire career, lyrically. I don't really love using the word "cringe" to describe things but, man, if the shoe fits.

Yeah calling it the most unfortunate moment in their career is a bit much. It's not even their worst lyric.

I am probably being hyperbolic but I genuinely can't think of a lyric of theirs that I detest anywhere close to this. I think the fact that it stands out so prominently makes me recoil at it even more.

  11. Excuse me what? I've been listening to her music for years and I had no idea they did anything together. That's wild... but also quite cool.

the line is fitting in the context of the song's lyrics. organized religion made him devalue himself, and he now he thinks the opposite. it's not eloquent, but it makes sense (and for him it's probably powerful to say that he's truly enough by himself)

lol yeah Aaron cowrote the whole most recent record. I can’t even call it a guilty pleasure, it’s just so fucking good. Undoubtedly his greatest side quest of all time.

we'll probably never hear them, but i'm curious to hear the songs Aaron did with Bill Crook (ex-Spiritbox) before he died

I understand the lyric's intent, I just think it sucks. Not really a big deal, record is a lot of fun!

also to touch again on the "post-Christian grouchiness" of it all, that's also been a gripe of mine with the lyrics of their past couple records. but after hearing about what this album means to them, it sounds like their next album will probably veer away from those lyrics since they said they're all on the other side of their respective situations now and are singing about it from a healthier place on this record. in a way, it's made me go back and rethink of their past three records as a loose trilogy of sorts re: lyricism, with this album tying up any last threads from Erase Me and Voyeurist and moving on.

Okay… I’m fucking in. The only songs I dislike are Generation No Surrender and Survivors Guilt. Cannibal is an absolute banger. Can’t wait to give this more spins.

After one spin of the songs I hadn’t heard it’s a solid follow up to the previous two LPs but my first thought is I like Voyeurist significantly more. The cohesiveness is my biggest complaint at the moment. Still easily an 8/10.

Im sure this album is gonna do well for them. Some of the “contemporary” elements here grate on me. Their late career songwriting acumen is pretty impressive though.

This is a best case scenario for me. Every album since they reunited feels like a building block to something truly incredible. Feel it on this one too. I whole heartedly they could reach the heights of their best releases again. & i don’t mean that in a 2.0 version of the hits. I think they could grab the scene and genre by the horns and completely reinvent it again.

Also i didn’t intent to derail the album hype by sharing my few annoyances. This record rips and im overwhelmingly feeling positive about it.

no worries! i do think there's a confidence on this record that'll push them to do even more cool shit in the future. i'm someone who loves all of their records but has more of an affinity for their post-DTGL catalog (even though i really do love that record and TOCS), and i think this new album gets them one step closer to merging that older sound with their newer sound, albeit in a different way than say an album like Voyeurist does (which has previously tied with Disambiguation as my favorite of theirs)
