don't know if i'd necessarily call anything on this album Octane core (if by Octane core we mean overly generic, melodic, and hyperprocessed), but then again i don't listen to Octane so i probably don't have a good frame of reference
Hilarious how many times they copy and paste the same wretched ending here: repeat vocal hook, cut music at last moment, leave isolated vocal to contrive the pretence of emotional intimacy.
I liked this a lot more than I expected. Seems like all of my issues are with the lyrics that don't feel as explorative as I would hope and the song structures feeling quite repetitive (as the post above said). Still absolutely overshadowed by Deafheaven tho
Agreed. The whole "Fuck you, I'm enough" part in And Then There Was Nothing sounds like something a teenager would caption over a selfie on Instagram.
Oh I knew there was something in finding the songwriting formulaic but yeah they do that on 5 songs out of 12
Yeah I’d give this like a 6-6.5 out of 10. It feels like if they didn’t give into their absolute corniest impulses on certain parts, they would have an 8/10 easy
first impression is this was just okay for me. I think there were parts that were fucking awesome then others that I can skip pretty easily. You can definitely tell they were super influenced by their EDM buddies in a lot of parts. Easily their most bass heavy mix, imho, which I'm not complaining about. I'm sure I'll revisit a few tracks here and there but didn't hit me quite as good as Voyeurist did on first listen.
Agree with everyone’s general sentiment upon a few listens. Very mismatched song structures with random ideas thrown in that really throw off the song’s cohesiveness. Perfect example is shame. Song is solid in the verses with Spencer and goes in super random directions with the chorus and Aaron. Also continues to validate my feeling that I immediately get less excited for a song when Aaron’s parts come in. There’s a reason disambiguation is such a solid album.
this absolutely stinks. glad some people are enjoying, but absolutely beyond baffled at the LITSOS comparisons lol
As someone who has struggled to get back into this band post-reunion, I'm digging this album more that the last couple, but it still sounds like there's just *too much* going on in each song for me. DTGL and LITSOS are pummeling records, but there is a such a controlled chaos to them. I also miss the often sparse, post-rock vibe of those records as well. I randomly went back and listened to A Fault Line, A Fault of Mine after listening to the new album, and it's such a jarring change in sound. Also, surprised I haven't seen anyone say this yet, but the bridge of Vultures is the best moment of the new record.
Looking forward to giving this a headphones listen later, but my first spin I enjoyed this. Immediately like it more than the last two albums.
Only one listen in the books but Side A and Side B feel like two different beasts. Generation to And Then There… is heavy and Teeth to the closer is interesting. Not bad, just a shift. Could just be this initial listen though. I do have a few minor issues with tracks but even with a runtime of 36 minutes, there’s stuff to chew on. Just wished my PO wasn’t still in Austin, TX lol
I feel like the best parts of this album, they are trying to recreate that vibe. I don’t think they made anything close to as good but to my ears, that’s the old album they are trying to like pull from
I jsut don’t get why they made teeth a single. If that was just in the middle of the album as a surprise, I would have liked it so much more
