Out of sheer curiosity from the comments this weekend going back and listening to Erase Me and Vouyeurist today. Will report back.

Erase Me is so good. I get the push back on it, but this was a cool experimental album that has the essence of underoath with some growing pains of infusing it with some modern radio / poppy elements. I wish the band hadn’t shit on it so much after the album cycle died down. if you look at it objectively for what it is, it’s a cool reentry. If I could change one thing it would be 1-3 less of the spencer aaron pre studio songs and add in 1-3 more of the in the studio creations. They talk about tim not being super present during the making of this album if he had contributed as much unique guitar and songwriting components as chris did with synth I think the album would have been a lot better.

No Frame is by far my favorite song, On My Teeth fits nicely as a first single. I’ll never forget hitting play on the music video and immediately feeling excitement and relief that they still got it. I Gave Up is a killer closer.

I’m glad In Motion made it on the album as the only song they did with Feldman pre Matt Squire song. I would have loved another song or two in this vein. IMO it’s a better execution than Rapture. I like both though.

Overall not their best, but a very solid release. I actually think it’s better knowing the next one is pretty drastically different. I Was surprised to see it is in their top 4 streamed records on spotify. Also can’t divorce the enjoyment of the recorded album from the numerous times I saw them tour on it.

I think I'm always going to be a grumpy old man when it comes to Underoath. I think Voyeurist got close at times, but the new songs sound like a regression to me so far. I have the new singles on a playlist with some other new metalcore releases coming down the pipeline (Spiritbox, Silent Planet new single and their song with Invent Animate) and the Underoath songs sound so flat in comparison. Maybe that's unfair, and maybe I'm just more interested in what the "newer" bands have to bring to metalcore.

tbf invent animate is steep competition for any band to live up to, one of the best bands in recent memory

Just finished Voyeurist. It has by far the least plays for me. I didn’t resonate with it right when it came out, but have been doing at least a play through a month for the last bit and every time I find more to love about it.

Damn Excuses is such an amazing opener. They NEVER miss on track 1. So straight forward with all the fat trimmed.

Hallelujah is the “Hold my beer” song of this album. They did Dangerous Business and it was iconic and over the last 20 years many bands have tried to replicate it. I love that they could have gone full BMTH, but did it in a way that feels relevant to them in 2022. It is such a killer track.

Thorn is probably my favorite. I thought it was interesting reading through comments about people’s interpretation of “anthemic” when talking about this band. I think of songs like this, I Gave Up, and Too Bright when I think of UO as anthemic. I suppose it’s probably Tom’s fault when describing AVA 20+ years ago lol. When I think of anthemic I think of big songs that are reaching more than catchy songs that could be on the radio.

Pneumonia might be my favorite closer from them.

Overall this album is very good. There are some moments where the Aaron / Spencer trading vocals reach the heights of Lost for me. Aaron vocally doing his thing on these songs was missing from most of Erase Me, and this band is best when he does parts that sound tailored for UO and not like any of his other bands, projects, or cowrites. I love how the art direction is infused into the recordings. I still hate the Gostemane feature, but less so now than when it released. The post Christian lyrics still irk me on this one. It’s just a very long time to still be singing about it in this way without integrating and moving on imo. This is the best album with every member that writes and records equally contributing artistically in a cohesive way since Lost IMO.

The biggest missing piece of Underoath since reuniting (new singles included) is a producer that can capture live sounds on record the way Goldman did. I would love to see them do another record with him, not to get back some old sound, but to be produced in a way that plays to their live sounds and ethos.

Really love the journey this album has taken me on since it released. It still feels new and I find new things to love every time I hit play. I saw them do a fest date after this one released, but I regret not going to a show. I have distinct memories from Aaron’s last tour before he quit, seeing them twice with Daniel, A ton of Erase me fest dates and the big arena show to close out that era. Would have loved to see Pneumonia live

I am going to check the new singles when it comes out, but I am holding off the other singles till the record drops. I am equally as excited to hear something strange and wild whenever the Locus EP releases. I’m guessing after the next single, before the album drop.

we missed the trees glow gold beneath.

i got into underoath a few weeks before the erase me rollout started so that record will always have a soft spot in my heart. also shoutout to loneliness for being (in my opinion) one of their most underrated songs post-comeback. insane chorus.

I've gone back and forth on Voyeurist and how much I like it but I did realize some of my issues with it were a fawn response of trying to get approval from people and I realized that's not healthy. That's something I've been working on and have gotten better about over the years but I still occasionally slip up. As it stands now though, I do think it's a solid album. I agree with most of what @Ronald. said

You’ve inspired me to dust off Erase Me and throw it on, then spin Voyeurist (which I somehow bought 2 copies of and have never opened either…)

erase me has like 5 songs i dig on it, voyeurist maybe about 7, but they both have pretty suboptimal production. no frame and out of luck are both exceptional though, and would be my ideal framework for a future uo project. j give chris as much space as possible to go off into soundscapeland

    This new album fucking rips

  13. I should give Invent Animate a listen. I don’t keep up with modern (aka post 2015) metalcore except for my faves, veteran bands and those I got into around that time like Silent Planet, Northlane and a few others so I must be missing out.

Very jealous. Did they say anything about the EP, and how did the crowd respond to their set?

they definitely slot well with the silent planets and northlanes of the world, only band in that ecosystem id take over them at this point is erra. their first two albums sorta fused the og northlane sound with erra leads before they had their singer change, and now theyve switched to balancing cleans with more groove centric riffing. both takes on their sound rule, their whole discog is great

  16. There’s a live snippet of Loss, which was missing from the video posted the other day, on their story and it sounds nuts. Wonder if that’s the heavy track one of you heard a demo of in 2023.

  17. Erra is another one you’re reminding me to check. I’m on a heavy kick lately so… let’s goooo

I couldn’t help myself, I listened back to the singles. I love the sound musically, but the production isn’t great. The heavily compressed drums is throwing me. Like when the heavy guitar parts comes in that the drums are so clean and muted it feels like a disservice to Aaron’s whole ethos as a drummer and live. That being said I like Teeth way better as a recorded track than a live song, so maybe it’s intentional or it will make sense in the context of the whole album.

It’s fun to be excited about this band right now. Enjoying the deep dive. Had the thought I don’t need them to reach the heights of Define-Disambiguation and I am just happy to see them pushing the needle on artistic creativity. Seems like the people that want the classics again will continue to be disappointed and the people happy with the variety will continue to enjoy the post hiatus stuff.

hitting the highlighted letters in the order of FERE takes you to a page to enter the same word as a password, leading to a countdown that looks like it's ending tomorrow night at 8:25 PM EST. maybe we're getting the song early?

possibly, but tonight is Wednesday, so maybe it's something entirely different (especially since that would imply that the new single is up for streaming in other countries, and it doesn't look like it is)
