Watched the set and this really sounds like Erase Me: the sequel lol

This band is so funny. They publicly disown Erase Me during the Voyuerist album cycle and then make the same type of record again

All The Love is Gone is cool at least.

Also funny is how Tim, Spencer, and Grant are wearing the same masks but Chris and Aaron are wearing Slipknot masks?

What they should have done is played the album in full before a single was released in the same masks and turning down their stage mannerisms so there would be a little more mystic to it.

Voyeurist roll out was much cooler/better than this IMO.

  3. I don’t know if I’d go that far but I kept thinking this felt like a continuation of songs like Loneliness, Hold Your Breath and On My Teeth at times. Much more anthemic and with more conventional song structures than Voyeurist from what I could tell.

  4. I mean there’s nothing like Wake Me, Rapture or ihateit, thank god (oop)

Though there’s nothing like Pneumonia, I’m Pretty Sure I’m Out Of Luck or No Oasis either.

These songs all go straight to the point this time.

I would argue that these songs are even more anthemic than Erase Me - which is what turned a lot of fans off from that record.

I like Erase Me and remember defending it quite a bit when it first came out but Voyeurist was a much better sound/record since it meshed the two eras much better without going full (for lack of a better word) “radio”. Oh well.

  7. … are people listening to a different album than the one I am?

  8. Making snap judgements over muffled live versions like it’s 2008, I’ll never learn lol

I’m sure the finished product has a lot cooler production than a YouTube video (lol) but the songs still sound super anthemic and straight forward.. just like Erase Me.

  10. I dunno, “super anthemic” kinda just sounds like a good description of most of Underoath to me. But I just listened to both albums back to back and would in no way call them the same sounding. It’s a mix of the last two albums in an overall “feel” maybe, but stylistically is more like the last album in how it mixes in their catchy side with the harder elements. Songs like “Devil” and “Loss” are so much better distillations of the band making a catchy as hell rock song with uniquely Underoath elements. And, I unashamedly really like ‘Erase Me,’ but I do not think 2.0 is even close to a fair descriptor of an honest assessment of the two albums.

  11. Hold on, I don't know if Loss is missing from the video or if it wasn't played Also remembered Troy from Mastodon is on Vultures so his vocals are totally going to match over that bluesy riff

I haven’t listened to the live set, but I am not getting erase me vibes at all. The singles out have poppy melodic stuff in them, but there’s some pretty brutal parts in a way that has a really cool tension to it that feels fresh and not tired at all (even in teeth. the end GOES and it doesn’t feel disjointed or corny at all. ) IMO this feels very in line with the post hiatus stuff in that each record is it’s its own thing and distinctly different than anything else. The shuffle beat in survivors guilt, the jazz and bass in teeth, and the new take on call and response are all WILDLY distinct and feel like uncharted territory for this band.

I love erase me, but there’s a pretty explicit overlay of spencer and aaron’s inclinations from being cowriters that i don’t get at all on these songs. like i think of a song like wake me compared to teeth and the vibes / songwriting are radically different. You couldn’t throw any of these songs in the mix of erase me without it sounding out of place for that record.

can’t wait for more press to hear their thoughts and ideas for this record.

Nah this rips in a way that Erase Me lacked. I see them tomorrow in FTL so excited to hear a non-YouTube rip lol

the thing that initially held me back on some of these songs was some of the production choices (mainly how some of the heavier moments in the singles were "heavy" but a tad hollow compared to their last few albums, mostly on Teeth and ATTWN) and the repetitive nature of some of the lyricism (the chorus in Survivor's Guilt and the call & response in GNS are still growing on me).

but then ATLIG leaked and hearing that and the other songs with headphones made something click. there's something really unconventional about these new songs that i'm really starting to like, and i think part of my hesitancy to initially do that was the fact that i set my expectations incorrectly. between hearing the band initially say this was their best/heaviest since LITSOS and me still riding the high of Voyeurist (my favorite of theirs tied with Disambiguation), i expected something overtly and explicitly in that vein (albeit maybe a bit heavier), and i'm sure the album sounds like it in a lot of ways. but the singles so far haven't really felt like that, so once i set those expectations aside and started taking in the songs for what they are, i came to like them.

hearing that this is more akin to Voyeurist than anything else does have me intrigued though, so i'm gonna set aside my preconceived notions of how specifically they build up on that sound, and be surprised by what they came up with.

first impressions of this is that its trying to simultaneously both be poppier and heavier than the last two

Pumped for tomorrow. They’re playing a fairly tiny venue (for them) and it’s their first time down here in years

haven't heard it in full yet but i remember aaron saying in an interview in 2023 that the new album they were writing was the most diverse uø record, with the most pop songs they've ever written mixed with the heaviest songs they've ever written so i guess this is an accurate impression

Haven’t watched the set as I’m fully waits for the new album, but just want to say how amazingly cool it is for them to do this Locus Ultra stuff to promote the new album. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a band do something like this and I really appreciate this type of promotion. It’s really cool. Great job, Øath!!

Wish I could see some of these shows. Happy to know the album is super close to release!

granted im only going off a live vid lol but rather than each song being individually really heavy or really poppy it kinda sounded like they were trying to switch up between both within each track. shame's a pretty dramatic example of that

  22. Yep that's something that stood out for me as well. Not that they've never done that in the past (A Fault Line or Desperate Times, among other songs, come to mind) but it felt more prevalent this time.

As someone who was into Underoath in in high school and loved The Changing of Times, They're Only Chasing Safety, and Define the Great Line, and only recently went back and listened to the stuff I missed (Lost in the Sound of Separation and Disambiguation) and have been following them again post-hiatus, I really appreciate reading this tread and all the knowledge/opinions you all have!

Like, I can say whether or not I like a record. Maybe even use words like "heavy" or "melodic," but you all can analyze! And I'm here for it because I can actually make sense of it and it'll help me understand the music better :)
