damn i came out of mosh retirement helping with a cruise last year and there was a strong chance we were going to do emos not dead. it didn’t happen but i would have loved to see that set from side stage.

  4. I feel like this is one band where I feel so so so divorced from their "core" fans. Like, I really like their last three albums and sometimes being online makes me feel I'm alone there.

  5. Oh it’s not even about what’s being said about their recent work. It’s a combo of the laziest « bet they’re going to say FUCK on that one » jokes that already got old by the time the Erase Me era was over, or the odd grudges many of these fans seem to have against Aaron among other issues. I can understand having expectations not being met when meeting a musician you idolize but some of them get so personal and mean spirited… just weirdo behavior

We are lucky to have had such strong releases that push the envelope for such an important band in the scene post hiatus.

Voyeurist is so good but I don’t revisit Erase Me as much (mainly enjoyed it at the time but hasn’t had staying power).

Erase Me is one of those records that I can objectively look at as not top tier for them or even a band in this scene, but I was working fests a bunch at that time and saw the set probably 8 or 9 times and was at the Tampa Arena show Anberlin played. I was also marathon training and it got a ton of plays. On My Teeth is so tied to my body experience training.
Voyeurist is a better record, but it has by far the least plays for me of a UO record. I am just really intrigued in this band’s trajectory and longevity. Some albums are better than others but I respect the hustle to never make the same album twice and they so clearly give a shit about the work they put out. Their releases, art direction, boundary pushing, and the access they give to fans about their headspace creating is never boring.

Re: core audience and online discourse. I am always so curious about core vocal fans, vs. the folks who are going to these shows that they are direct support on and likely seeing them for the first time. I wonder how much those new people experience this band in a tight 40 minute / hour long set. Also there’s the whole intense Christianity that spills out in very rigid people feeling like it is their calling to be disgruntled and salty. Seems pretty split in the comments on the new songs. People either hate it without really giving it a fair shake “thanks, I hate it” or people are digging it.

Voyeurist had been my favorite modern Unnderoath for sure. Maybe even my favorite album from them. I really liked Erase Me but Voyeurist felt more cohesive as an album which earned it more points.

Yea voyeurist reminds me of armor for sleep’s rain museum in the sense that it feels like the more time-appropriate follow up to the last record people liked lol. Still is incomprehensible to me that longtime underoath fans might not like that record. Music, even from my favorites, doesn’t hit as hard these days as it did growing up but the only “flaw” I can really find in voyeurist is that it was the first UO record to not challenge me to like it. It’s not derivative or uncreative, but it didn’t do anything unpalatable or force me to accept something I didn’t immediately like, and part of what made my bond to the band so strong during the heyday was how they dragged me into liking heavier and heavier, less polished music.

meanwhile the new record feels like it’ll have that excitement and challenge but without the cohesion of the earlier records (though also without the awful radio elements on rapture and wake me).

It’s an actual natural phenomenon that the newer music doesn’t hit or land as hard as their older stuff. It has to do with us listening to those older albums during our formative years. They created a lasting impression.

That’s why younger fans of blink-182 have such soft spots for Neighborhoods or California or NINE because those albums were hitting their temporal lobe as the perfect moment/age. It’s also why blink’s Untitled will never be topped for me, but I still enjoy their later outputs. That same feeling is similar with Underoath as well. Those core albums will never be topped, but I’d be lying if I said I haven’t enjoyed the post hiatus stuff.

    Always stoked for new Øath!!!

    idk man

That's so funny because I agree with this with every other band except for Underoath! I got into them (and the scene as a whole) in early 2018, so Erase Me was a formative record for me and my mindset at the time. however as time has gone on, I have grown further away from it and gravitated more towards the early stuff. I think Lost In The Sound Of Separation is one of my favorite heavy records in general, and I didn't even listen to it in full until maybe 2022. Very fascinating to think about, and incredibly important to keep in mind for artists when judging their longevity. Every album is going to be someone's first from an artist.

Anyways, I hope this new record is a good one.

Quality is not quite good enough for me to discern much from the first two minutes so I won’t bother with the rest, but I will say it is funny how you can totally tell who they are from the mannerisms and movements. I mean Tim and Chris are the most Tim and Chris they could be.

    Imagining them either:

    - walking around the ship in those masks so not give away the fact that they were playing a secret show

    or

    - staying in their cabins literally 24/7 to avoid being seen

going to hold off till the album releases, but this is as cool as digital ghost but upping the punx big time. jealous of anyone going to the shows. There’s no monetary gain from this, and it’s not even getting a ton of attention. UO remains artists forever in the pursuit of radical expression.

  24. Just watched the set.

    - Devil and Cannibal are fucking sick, blending pre-breakup and post-reunion Underoath like they did well on Voyeurist. Have a good feeling both will be my favorites.
    - Not a fan of the elongated hook, very modern metalcoresque chorus in Shame, especially when All The Love Is Gone is already similar in that sense, but... it's very catchy and has Tim's signature riffing again so I'm keeping an open mind.
    - Vultures sounds a bit... corny? Idk, the main riff has a bluesy dad rock feel I don't expect from them, keeping an open mind as well.
    - Spinning In Places is the one I'm the most intrigued to hear with full production because it seems to subvert the anthemic nature of the other songs, playing around with song structures like their old material.
    - Outlier doesn't sound like anything they've done, reminding me of a couple of Norma Jean's album closers instead. Also curious to hear the studio version.
    - And Then There Was Nothing sounds like it could be a future set staple with the way the crowd reacts to it.

They're definitely trolls for releasing Teeth first lol.

  25. Anyway it's such a cool idea to build hype. Obviously, it would've been cooler for us if nothing had leaked but it must've been rad for the UO fans on the cruise to witness this.
