I woulda released "Hold Your Breath" as the second song from the album if it was me. I think it bridges the bug chorus/accessibility with the experimentation/heaviness other fans wanted. But no one asked me. Heh.
Underoath is sort of like Tswift.. everyone says the albums gonna bomb when the singles come out... then it ends up being a huge success
Honestly getting Rapture out of the way so when the full album comes out I can be blown away with heavier stuff is fine by me
I remember some backlash on DTGL since it leaked hella early but I loved it. With that said; I was one of the many people who wrote off Disambiguation for years and I’ve grown to love it. It’s probably my favorite album of theirs now. I’m an idiot for not appreciating it sooner.
It's funny that you say that, because during my listens last night, the part of A Boy Brushed Red where Aaron sings "Slit wrists sleeping with the girl next door, I always knew you were such a sucker for that" reminded me of TBS so much lol
Rapture and On my Teeth are growing on me. Im actually anticipating this more now because I have 0 idea what the finished product is going to sound like.
I actually think that of the two REALLY accessible mainstream rock "radio" songs on here, Wake Me is the better one. But it's even poppier than Rapture, so I can see why they picked Rapture instead as the second single.
I surprisingly like Rapture more than On My Teeth. The vocals and instruments are more solid on it. On My Teeth sounds good but I think it sounded like the band couldn’t decide if they wanted to separate from their old sound or make a new sound while Rapture feels like the band knew 100% what they wanted to accomplish and did it.
When I saw Aaron two months ago, he said that the original line was “I always knew you were such a sucker for that whore” but their label made them edit it. It could have been worse than it is now.
That song is probably the closest they get to that album. Overall I think this album is much more dynamic, instrumentally and vocally, than That's the Spirit.
That’s good to hear. An album full of songs like Rapture and On My Teeth wouldn’t get many repeated listens but if those songs are coupled with songs that sound different then they’ll be nice breathers.
"Sink With You" is my favorite track so far. The ending of that one goes OFF. Chris Dudley has more to do on this album than on any previous UO release, and I think when they really go all-in on the heavily electronic-tinged metalcore it's really fucking cool.
So accurate and so stupid. Underoath is definitely one of the worst victims of this, but it happens with every band and it baffles me. I just can't relate to complaining about my favorite bands taking chances stylistically and innovating on their core sound. That's what makes new music so exciting to me.
Just finished my first full listen... very, very impressed overall. It's definitely a different direction than they were headed pre-breakup, but with eight years between albums that shouldn't be surprising at all. They really tried a LOT of new things on this album, and it mostly pays off imo. The interview where Spencer says they didn't want to ever say "This isn't Underoath enough" really proves true, across the entire album. And imo that leads to a pretty thrilling listen on a lot of songs. There's still a lot of obvious care and attention to detail that went into these songs despite the sonic shift. I have some complaints, but my initial impression is a very positive one.
This is gonna be a polarizing album FOR SURE, but I really think most listeners will find a lot to like when they get past their initial expectations. Just the fact that this is how they decided to come back, with such a different sonic direction, is pretty damn cool to me.
