I really like Disambiguation too but in that interview, Spencer states he didn't want to write another weird sounding album that no one wanted to listen to more than once. I guess that means he thought the album was poorly received?

What does it mean if I like the song and will download it because it’s Underoath but if a band that I didn’t have a connection with released it I wouldn’t put it in my library?

Maybe Rapture is not a Good Song, but it’s been stuck in my head all day.

    I do not exist.

Wait, where are these UK dates?! I'd only heard about the US Redeemer tour.

Edit: found them. Only just announced!

Yea I was hoping for him jumping on for the Redeemer tour, I'm seeing it next week. But they got another former ETID drummer doing it! Funny how small the world can be sometimes.

Wouldn't bet on it, only because Legs from Every Time I Die has been on the kit for every Redeemer tour date thus far.

yea and he's right with that thought, when the album came out it wasn't that well received by fans at the time. Reviewers seemed to like it, but people were really bummed out that Aaron left also around that time they started speaking out about not wanting to be labeled christian anymore. I don't think it sold well either.

I think only over the past few years it started to get the recognition it deserves from fans.

Has UO ever see this much resistance to anything they’ve done before? Was a song like “Rapture” wanted or expected from their label/team following Chasing Safety in 2006?

There’s a lot to digest from “Rapture” for me personally. As much of a difference it is from their canon I find it surprisingly easy to keep listening to it. The post chorus is my favorite part of the song. My one gripe is the instrumentation taking a step back to let the vocals really shine. I guess that’s the product of the song being poised to take on radio, but still weird to hear that coming from UO.

I guess I can make the joke that Chris has more to do on these two songs than Aaron’s vocals.

When Dallas left and they got poppier in TCOS, the band's fans nearly completely turned over. They've had this backlash before - it's just been awhile.

  17. IIRC most of their albums/singles faced quite a bit of AP.net "fan" backlash to start. DTGL had people very upset for a while. Disambig got all kinds of hate on release.

yep, doing the rebirth tour and playing those old songs that fans adored and lauded as their best, might have probably worked against them in terms of them wanting to head in a new direction. I mean first of all fans didn't care too much for their last album then played a couple of their most liked albums back to back, so they might have definitely thought that the "old" underoath was back.

I think that's a huge factor in terms of them receiving so much backlash for new stuff. Fans fail to realize that this is probably a direction they would have ended up taking either way. Backlash is inevitable for them unless they pander to fans that want the "old" underoath back.

I didn’t get into the Dallas stuff until after DTGL’s release, but I could only imagine hearing Chasing Safety week one after following the band’s work before that. Social media now is a much bigger horse than MySpace back in 2003-04.

Pretty sure he quit ETID cause he didn’t wanna tour anymore so I’m sure it’s casual if he is playing at all.

Also Legs is now Norma Jean’s drummer so that’s funny since Goose from NJ left to join ETID.

I think I signed up for AP in spring of 09 so I would have only been around for the Disambig release. I remember Drew’s review having hundreds of comments and I remember having not much interest in checking out that album because Aaron had left (stupid me).

People being upset with DTGL is really something I wish I was there for.

  23. Hah, yeah, that sounds about right. And was definitely how a lot of people felt at the time.

There was a contingent that really, really wanted that band to be TBS part 2 and continue down that super "scene" path from TCOS.

Here's the oversimplified collective internet reaction I remember to new Underoath music over the years...

UO Fans in 2004: Why is this so poppy? I miss Dallas and the days when this band played heavy music.

UO Fans in 2006: What happened to the choruses? There’s no accessibility here.

UO Fans in 2008: I wish they’d just play heavy stuff like “Breathing in a New Mentality.” Just drop the melodic stuff already.

UO Fans in 2010: This just isn’t the same band without Aaron.

UO Fans in 2015: Why come back just to play the old stuff? Let’s hear something new!

UO Fans in 2018: I miss the sound of the old music. Why’d they have to change?

All jokes aside, I wasn't blown away by "Rapture" as a standalone track, but upon hearing the album in full, I can say that I really like the direction of it. As mentioned by some others, the production is absolutely stellar. I'm really excited to see what everyone takes away from it.

I don't remember any backlash to DTGL, but I didn't have much online presence back then. All my scene friends and I were into it.
