I can't believe this is (mostly) the same band that wrote LITSOS and Disambiguation. I really didn't need a song like this in 2018.
It just sucks to see them regress to this sound. They’ve shown so much potential on the last two albums, that for them to go in this direction is definitely a bummer.
Listened twice, I dig it quite a bit already. Definitely a new level of “accessibility”. Highlights: -Syncopated crash hits vs a straight wash -Dig the snare hit prior to the “delayed” full band start -Spencer sounds great -Guitar effect into vs 2 -lead in vs 2 -Bridge, I’ve really liked how Aaron sounds on both songs released so far -Drum pattern at the end of the bridge. -Everything about the post chorus -Programming, particularly the keys at the end I wouldn’t haven’t minded a continuation of LITSOS (that’s my favorite of theirs), but I’m stoked to hear them try what I consider to be some new ground for them. Stoked for the record
I got bored halfway through and just sort of zoned out and didn't pay attention to anything past the 2nd chorus. Oh well.
The same two people who sang on that record are the same two people that sang on their past 4 records, minus Disambiguation. So I'm not sure I get what you're saying there. I mean, I still find the song pretty boring regardless. I'm back to only listening to DTGL and occasionally On My Teeth for now.
Hmm I guess I don't really remember Spencer singing instead of screaming on that record except for in the closer. It's been awhile.
I’m gonna hold off on listening until the release but I did hear the clip on instagram. Really heavy BMTH vibes, which is fine for the token radio song. Big difference to their other stuff seems to be the synth taking the lead as opposed to just creating atmosphere. I’d hoped sunburnt/unsound/paper lung would be as radio friendly as they got but it still sounds good. Drew’s description keeps my anticipation sky high.
Yeah honestly there's a lot of hyperbole in this thread based on 2 songs, especially after the 2 people who have heard the whole thing say it gets a whole lot better than these 2 songs and they aren't even as bad as people are saying.
Still holding out hope for the album as a whole, but I genuinely feel no desire to listen to that song again.
This sounds like a RED song with a dash of Circa Survive. Granted, RED is one of the few radio rock/alt. metal bands I still dig, but it's weird to hear an Underoath song in that vein. BUT the musicianship is still on a different level here than most bands in that genre and I'm sure I'll like it more in the context of the album. To sum up: I dig it, but I absolutely understand why someone would flat-out hate it.
As much as I don't mind this, I also don't blame the people who loved this band and are pretty bitter about this. It's a significant departure and while I'm all for bands exploring new avenues of sound, it can burn a little bit more when it's a band that's somewhat iconic returning after a long time away. A much bigger degree of letdown than a band simply changing it up on their third or fourth record or something. I'm still excited for the record as a whole and I hope others will hold out for this, but I don't at all blame the people who are expressing significant frustration. (except for everyone in a tizzy over some "bad words" lol)
doesn’t feel entirely fair to call this worse than TOCS. i think a lot of that is colored by hindsight bc we know what they’re capable of. it’s bad, but i’d still rather listen to either of these songs gun to my head before anything this band put out prior to DTGL
as i said last night its definitely that TOCS saw them at a much younger age, giving it a scrappiness thats appealing. more appealing than the super serious "dark" vibe of this.
The screaming style on TOCS make it so hard to listen to, for me. I don't see how people think this is a regression- implying that the only way for them to progress is to be heavier, darker, sludgier, etc. It is just different and I really don't see how this sounds anything like TOCS.
