been listening through the discog the last couple of days. I think my favorite is DTGL. There is a lot of growth from TOCS to DTGL, and LITSOS (acrononyms, I know) just seems like a refinement of DTGL, but I think I like DTGL more because it was a new and fresh sound for them. I also didn't give Disambiguation a fair shake when it came out. Trying to do that now. EDIT: the prime example of the growth is listening to something like A Boy... then listening to Casting Such A Thin Shadow. Spencer sounds fairly thin on TOCS, but his vocals on that song are absolutely MASSIVE.
The Changing of Times still has some stuff on it, and it's fun to go to their first 2 every once in awhile
I listened to The Sun Still Sleeps yesterday and have no desire to go back to the full album. The Last is fun for kicks and giggles, but that's about it.
I tried listening to some of their first two the other day and it was borderline unlistenable, that one song they put on Anthology is laughably awful. I like When The Sun Sleeps but haven’t actually tried to listen to the rest of that album.
the screams in the beginning are the funniest part. I was about to make fun of the lyrics but apparently it's about Dallas' girlfriend dying, so... nevermind.
Interesting. I ham relatively new to these guys. I haven't listened to a full album from them before, but I dig the new song.
If you want to check out more, it all depends on what you're into. TOCS is the catchiest, but the least heavy. They get more technical and less catchy each album after that in my opinion.
The Changing of Times has some real fun jams. Huge riffs and ridiculous double pedal peppered throughout. Had good times listening to and covering that album in high school.
Disambiguation is by a huge margin the best production i have high hopes for erase me. not a crazy squire fan, but ken andrews from failure mastered it and his studio work is great
I’ve never been huge on Act of Depression but I was real into Cries of the Past and The Changing of Times in early high school. I like Disambuguation a ton but I’d put it pretty far behind Define the Great Line and Lost In the Sound of Separation.
Yeah, Disamiguation probably has my favorite production. I don’t think the others sound bad, but after re-watching the making-of docs it’s clear that they benefited from Goldman letting them be a little looser and more live than Adam D allowed. Sometimes, especially on LITSOS, the production seemed way too rigid and you can kinda tell from watching the doc that they weren’t totally pleased with that.
It’s always been Define the Great Line for me but that, along with The Artist in the Ambulance, was also the album that got me into heavier music.
too much bloat on LITSOS. disambiguation is an unrelenting journey into the abyss. its heavy, it rarely meanders if ever. its the tightest set of songs they've ever made
Idk I don’t think LITSOS is their overall strongest album, but to me there’s no question about it being the most comprehensive record of their post-Changing Of Times career. It wraps up the two that came before it nicely while also bearing many traces of where they’d go with Ø.
I listened to LITSOS again today and I think it starts and ends strong, but the middle portion of the album still doesn't grab me much. I agree that there's some bloat on the album. Also, I think The Created Void is the worst song they've done post-TOCS
