This is both my biggest disappointment of the year and yet still high on my EOTY. some of that is fanboying, but as noted above I think most of the songs are great without the context of previous work. Also think it’s weird there’s been a mix of comments since release saying either “I like all but 2 songs” or “I only like 2 songs.” Still think if loneliness replaces wake me the reception is a big difference.
Wake Me is a sweeettt song though! I think it's too similar to Rapture and too close to it in the track listing. They just need the two bonus tracks on here as well to help balance it a bit.
Yea I mean the only part I don’t like is the chorus, and I love the bridge. I’m sure i like it more than the average thread poster. That said, as much as I like both rapture and wake me on their own they’re obviously stylistic outliers and I think either/both b-side makes the record more cohesive/palatable.
I agree as well. I'm actually surprised they didn't go with Wake Me as a single since Rapture did so well. I like ihateit more though, so that is awesome. That bridge seems too brutal for radio play though haha.
The scream in Ihateit's second chorus is so corny and out of place. Feels like the thing a younger hard rock band would do to make themselves appear as heavy.
I mean I'll always love the band's previous albums for what they are, especially LITSOS, but it's definitely clear that they just don't want to pursue that sound anymore. I can't blame them. Honestly I'm glad we got this album. Hell I'm glad we got the Sleepwave album too. As time has gone on I have been listening to less metalcore (save for like a few bands, like this one, that I feel like are unique/interesting in the genre) and more alternative rock/alternative metal/industrial stuff and both releases scratch those itches for me. If we had gotten a huge epic metalcore album, I'd love it and listen to it a ton I'm sure. But as t stands we got a very very solid Alternative metal (I will not call this album "pop" because it just isn't in this day and age and you won't see songs like these on pop radio stations in 2018 and we all know that) I'm loving how dark and, for lack of a better term, "edgy" these songs are because that is the type of music I am currently very drawn to. At the same time I get why so many people here don't like and that's perfectly okay. Sorry for the rant. As understandable as it is, the amount of negativity in this thread for an album i genuinely really really like is draining.
Chris posted on Instagram that the band decided they’re playing 3 songs in particular that either they have never played or haven’t played in over a decade, and he also made a post mentioning there’s a LITSOS song the band hasn’t ever played before that they’re playing on the upcoming tour...
This is exactly how I feel on it. I will say that seeing them play the songs live really helped me click with the album more.
I’ve traveled to 3 different states to see spencer fall flat every time the chorus of rapture comes in this year, and the same exact set of ~hits~ they played on each show. It was so refreshing to see Chris mention that. The rebirth tour was cool, but seeing those same basic songs for the next 3 years after is getting so tiring when LITSOS exists.
I was hoping for a 10 year LITSOS tour, but between the new album and LITSOS not being not as popular in general as TOCS and DTGL, I get why it never happened, as sad as it is.
Could you elaborate on this? Is that a part he struggles to sing well live? I haven’t seen them since the new album came out, so I have no idea lol
It’s odd. Underoath was the biggest comeback of the last few years for me and I forget this album even exists. I liked it fine, but have had no desire to go back to it. Listening back now, I feel about the same. I can see this being a stepping stone into an absolute behemoth of an album down the road though.
They need to play the best 3 song stretch they have on any album: Fault Line, Emergency Broadcast, Only Survivor.
I won’t believe any set list hype until I hear it live myself. Feel like they’ve gone into each post-reunion tour with a “best setlist ever” and “spanning all albums” selling point and it’s largely the same every time (the latter technically true but it’s cheap). Heck at the last show I saw Spencer tried to generate hype by saying “breathing in a new mentality” was the heaviest song they ever wrote. That all sounds overly harsh considering I adore the record and I’ll see them every time they come within 6 hours of me but man am I tired of seeing like 75% of the non-erase me setlist. That said, I fully expect the next record to be at least half wake me/rapture-type songs so ima enjoy these while I can.
They've played it live before and it sounds huge! That being said , It would 100% be worth seeing them again if they brought it out for this tour!
Let's see, scouring Youtube and my memory, Underoath has played the following songs off LITSOS live: Breathing In A New Mentality Anyone Can Dig A Hole Emergency Broadcast The Only Survivor We Are The Involuntary The Created Void Desperate Times Too Bright To See Desolate Earth So if this is a song never performed live it's apparently either Fault Line or Coming Down Is Calming Down.
