In Motion is solid but I think I Gave Up works better as the closer if that makes sense. They tried something pretty different, and imo hit it out of the park.
I really think ending on “there is no fix” would’ve been a killer ending to the album. This is entirely driven by my depression experiences and how they line up with Spencer’s same emotions to his addictions in a lot of ways. They usually do the “different” end song, so I get I Gave Up in that regard. The difference is I don’t find any of their others boring. I’m glad people have such a diverse song like opinion of this album—kinda validates the band in a lot of ways we all can’t agree on anything.
In Motion has grown the most for me out of all the songs on this album. I went from not being big on it to it being a very solid song with a good chorus and bridge.
The very first few seconds of in motion are a little awkward but as soon as he starts screaming, Aaron kicks in, and you hear the first prominent mini-solo, I thought that would be a fan favorite.
Yeah out of the tracks that weren't doing much for me, In Motion has grown on me the most. I kinda jam with the chorus now
Returning to this for the first time in a couple weeks... I had my advance for a few weeks before the album dropped and I almost burned myself out on it for a bit recently. But my god, this is still such a fun listen. I obviously understand why it’s been so divisive, but for me it’s one of the best mainstream rock albums in quite a while.
Here it is as promised haha. I used It Has to Start Somewhere because they played it in their set on this tour so there was footage of it.
Yeah this really fell off a cliff for me. I tried really hard to get into it. Just dislike too much of it too really keep it in the rotation.
I think that’s my biggest problem. It’s fine. Moments that are cool. Some stinkers. This is a band I worshiped in the genre. So prob more expectation setting than anything.
I'm actually listening to it now which is funny. In Motion, It Has to Start Somewhere and On My Teeth are classic UO songs for me.
This is still firmly my AOTY. it’s not the UO record I wanted and it still has some issues but there’s too many good moments to ignore.
Yeah there’s like 4 songs on here worth returning to. I kinda wish they had released an EP of those songs first, then took a little more time to hone a full album. My 4 picks would’ve been It Has To Start Somewhere On My Teeth Hold Your Breath In Motion
For what it’s worth I do think those are probably the best 4, assuming you’re not including loneliness.
I don't think time had anything to do with it, I just think this is the album they wanted to make and the sound they want now. Nice top 4 btw
Yeah based on interviews, it seems like this is exactly where they wanted to go. They didn't wanna play it safe and make a record that the fans wanted, they wanted to make the record that they wanted. Also I am surprised you wouldn't include "No Frame" in your EP.
