Yeah, it’s this. There’s zero nuance to the lyrics on this record. They’re effective and catchy at best, but they’re nowhere near the creative and literary highs of the DTGL-O run. And it’s not necessarily a bad thing—especially when it’s a literal take for emotions I feel/have felt—but it does detract imo
After many listens I’ve reached a similar conclusion on the lyrics. It’s the one thing holding me back from fully loving this album.
How did someone saying basically “it really sucks for someone to go out of their way to tell you that what you made is bad” get so much misinterpreted / negative response lol This site needs to relax holy shit
That’s not what you originally said though. Came across incorrectly This thread is worse than the album tbh
The lyrics may not be his finest but I don’t think they’re bad or overly cliche. Just a more palatable version of what he’s always done imo. Also a friend of mine who hadn’t listened to them since the DTGL days listened since I told him it was more accessible and he said it was too much like 30STM and Taking Back Sunday lol. Goes to show two things: the poppier direction got new listens, and the mix is one of the biggest differences between this record and their others. Tim has a lot of great parts on this.
Well that’s just objectively true I will say I definitely think the teebs post came across as “you can’t criticize music unless you make music”
Well it’s definitely not what I meant. I would never want to be a music critic. I actually think knowledge of music theory and being a musician can actually hinder ones ability to properly criticize music.
It was a bad post, low blood sugar... and was annoyed from sitting in the apple store for hours on end lol.
Matt Carter's podcast. (Emery's guitarist) Underoath's Tim McTague on the Process of "Erase Me" (Ep 117)
I love Aaron throughout this, but dang the bridge he does in Wake Me makes me cringe a bit. I'm okay with the rest of it, but definitely the weakest section of the album.
Also the chorus in ihateit was pretty dull, but then I noticed Aaron sings these "woahs" that are a nice addition.
