yes! I find albums are where these artists tend to veer more towards a chance to experiment so I was so happy when he made an album that makes me dance from start to finish okay, LOVE those boys. that will require more consideration and the list was more rough/for fun but I do struggle with that album a lot. I love half of it dearly and half unfortunately fell a little flat for me, some of the pop vocals took a toll on me. Seeing the songs live was incredible but I'm more likely to throw on the first LP than this one. That being said, I haven't listened to it in a while so I'll play it a bunch this month to see how it settled. The section from 4-8 didn't do much for me upon release, but the start and finish are some of my favorite material from them.
coulda just been where i was at in my life when it came out but that record really meant a lot to me upon release and impacted me in a huge way emotionally. i think its every bit as good as the debut and i like the way they really tried to expand themselves outward instead of retreading to the same ol same ol, like the way they use real vocalists over samples is an interesting technique that paid off and gave it more of a humanized feel and made the emotional impact even greater
No shade at them whatsoever, I love those boys and their label so much. I'll definitely play it more and may feel very differently but at the time the polished vocals in Something To Believe In and Darling Cheryl just didn't sit right with me. Not bad, but I've also taken to some more fringe dance music in the past year than I normally do so my ear was probably just focused elsewhere
i never really got into the new djds album, but "i dont love you" is one of my favorite songs of the year
Working on looking through this thread since it's right up my alley. Also, anyone have upcoming shows/DJ sets? Thinking about Pearson Sound (Brooklyn) later this month, or Plaid in Jan
i dont even know of any spots in boston i might be able to check those kinds of shows out, i saw giraffage at a club the other week and jon hopkins at a regular venue a few years ago but have no clue where this kind of music lives in the city, if at all
Definitely go see Pearson, would be incredible! I've got nothing lined up (have to be pretty choosy for when I head up to Toronto, $$$) but I'm waiting for Jan/Feb announcements to plan some trips Highlight of the year was Four Tet/Ben UFO from 10-4am haha Bored at work so I did a scout on RA, Middlesex seems to be the place doing more forward thinking bookings, saw Beautiful Swimmers and Tim Sweeney (does the excellent Beats in Space podcast) were playing there. No idea where it is in relation to you but if it's close Id keep my eye on that spot if you feel like venturing into this stuff
@Joel - I'll do my best haha. Jealous about Four Tet, I missed him back in May (Philly). Most of the good ones are 10pm start times unfortunately. Nicolas Jaar actually played normal venues (Webster Hall, Union Transfer) during his fall dates and I'm pissed I couldn't make any of those. RA = resident advisor?
Also, nothing groundbreaking but I'm digging the Micheal Mayer and Demdike Stare albums from 2016. I have a few more i'm forgetting that I didn't see in this thread. Will post later Edit: Via App is dope too
I was also supposed to see Four Tet but I bailed bc I was too anxious at the time and doing two shows back to back was messing with my head.
thats too bad! I will say that (for me) dance stuff is the one thing I don't hate going alone to, everyone is generally moving in a sea of bodies and pretty unaware of people around them, I can do my nerdy shuffle and nobody takes any notice. People are also generally in very good spirits for any number of reasons, if you pop out for fresh air you're likely to make a buddy for the evening maybe I've just gotten lucky but lots of warm/accepting vibes at the Toronto shows I've been to
Pitchfork's Top 20 Electronic releases: The 20 Best Electronic Albums of 2016 | Pitchfork Most were mentioned in here but a few I haven't heard of.
Jubilee and Motion Graphics are cool records, need Shy Layers and Marie Davidson Shout out to Omar-S for being the man
That P4K experimental album list has a lot of crossover with electronic: Amnesia Scanner, Arca, Huerco S, Tim Hecker, etc.
