oh wow - I'm stuck at work until about 1630, but I cannot wait to listen to this on my drive home what a cool surprise!! I've been playing the hell out of their other surprise EP from a little while ago
This is what they should have been doing for the past two decades. Just getting stuff out there and not overthinking it. Super excited to listen to this today.
Wow this really blew me away. Thought the first EP was a cool exercise with mediocre music, this one has me thinking I judged it too early… six good to great songs that feel vital.
I still haven't had a chance to listen to this, but with the Days of Ash EP, 4 out of the 6 songs were really good with one of those being an absolute masterpiece, so hearing that this is better is incredibly exciting
yeah honestly Tears is the only thing on the first EP that goes toe to toe with these new tracks imo. wild how good it is
this is the best thing theyve done in decades. edit: missed everyone else saying this. glad were all on the same page haha
i was pretty happy with days of ash as an exercise of seeing what they can do when they dont over labor everything, but yeah, i wouldnt say i was really expecting something of this caliber again (altho tears of things and one life at a time do meet the standard here for me) all of these songs rule, last three especially
I listened to this a couple times on my ride home - yeah, this EP is great. more consistently awesome overall than Days of Ash, even if "The Tears of Things" is still the best track across both of these EPs. this EP is especially refreshing and exciting musically. even just on a couple listens there were absolutely standout parts from each of them that made me sit back and just smile. I never would have known that was The Edge singing on the opener either - it almost sounded like younger Bono to me, like when bands put new music to a vocal that was recorded a long time ago. such an awesome surprise. very hard to not be incredibly excited about whatever they have cooking up for later in the year.
just threw on MLK and had a powerful little moment thinking how special it is we got another song with just Bono and an Eno soundscape 40+ years later and they're both so fucking good. what a band
threw this on again yesterday and i still really loved it. in a life is the only one that feels a little underdeveloped but that bridge vocal melody before the last chorus brings it home so strong it makes up for it easter parade is that good stuff, truly never thought wed hear anything like that again
So happy, these are great. “If I sound ridiculous - I’m not done yet” is just, so Bono, man never change lol I like Ashes too but I respect it more now after hearing this one, of the two I think that one is more interesting, for this band anyway. It makes sense how they’ve separated them.
if Easter Parade came out in the 2000s we'd be calling it their last classic I think, that song is something special Scars is the only slightly lesser one here for me, chorus melody and lyrics feel a bit generic which makes sense since it started as an EDM collab. still would take it over almost anything on SoE
yup, I absolutely love this - I feel like I have a huge grin on my face from beginning to end with this EP
yeah ill admit scars is a little much sometimes lol but its also one of the instrumental highlight moments for me so it balances out, im kinda impressed hearing they clawed that sick edge riff out of a song that was supposed to be an edm collab lol
I haven’t really loved any full album they’ve put out in a long time (every one has at least a few great songs…like every breaking wave, the troubles, moment of surrender, etc.) but I am enthralled by this ep. The beginning of resurrection song sounds like some unforgettable fire shit, I’m so happy because u2 at their best are up there with the absolute best of all time.
Echoing what others have said, Easter Lily EP is astonishingly good. I haven’t liked anything they’ve done since a few songs on No Line so I’d completely written them off at this point (and frankly doubted they’d even put new music out again)
