it's funny, because I even tried to go back and phrase it differently as like "late era" or "late stage" or something, because you are 100% correct, but I am tired and nothing better that made sense was coming to me
tbf a lot of the delay has been larry not being able to play, of which he's reportedly good to go now i also kinda think they got the "loud, uncompromising rock" stuff out of the way with re-assemble honestly. none of those songs had vocals prior to them except the ones that were already released in some shape or form so maybe it was enough to wet bono's whistle
What they really need to do is just let go of the identity they are constantly trying to chase and just make what sounds good. Like I never cared that much about Your the Best Thing About Me, but then they put out that acoustic version and it was a million times better. Just go organic I guess
Everything they've released in the past 20 to 25 years blurs together. I don't know what they could do to make me care about an entire album again.
no line was 80% there for me, moment of surrender into unknown caller is too powerful. engulf me in those unforgettable fire textures and stop trying to be a linear pop rock band is ultimately my biggest wish
I like all the albums they’ve put out in that period, but they’ve gotten so slow about making albums that these later period ones are having to bear all the weight of their inactivity, which makes them look worse. Also, the iPhone thing really, really hurt their legacy.
unfortunate because the back half of songs of innocence is their best run since pop the ire at the iphone thing was always kinda misplaced since that was way more apple's bad and no one had the same ire for apple, but the public always wants free reasons to hate this band
Yeah, I maintain that was completely an Apple fuck-up and had way more to do with the technology than the music. But it's damned that album forever. I would love a remix and remaster of Innocence that gives it back some of the rough edges that those songs should have. Ryan Tedder and Danger Mouse were not the right people to bring that vision to life.
Danger Mouse seemed interesting when they first announced working with him. But then four years later when they actually released it half the songs on the radio sounded like Danger Mouse and it was no longer exciting.
I am not gonna post the link but... Bono is on the latest episode of Joe Rogan's podcast, so fucking random!
insider sources seem to be saying the album is basically finished and we should be expecting a summer single into fall album rollout did not think it would take 9 fucking years after experience lol, hopefully the time off has given them some inspiration
is it too much to hope that they took 8¾ years off on vacay and then hopped in the studio and whipped up an album real quick...???
it sounds like they spent the time writing and scrapping like 10 different albums lol, idfk what were gonna get at this point
This band should just pull a Springsteen and release a "lost albums" box set compiling all the abandoned projects from the past two decades. Take the pressure off the comeback, clear the decks, and probably generate a lot more good will than they've had for any one release since probably Atomic Bomb.
Tracks II was such a huge treat for Springsteen fans, and makes me think a lot of acts could benefit from doing something similar. Can't think of a better candidate than U2.
yeah i need tracks u2, when bruce dropped that my first thought was that i hope it encourages the boys to empty the vault
I do feel like How to Re-Assemble an Atomic Bomb at least indicates that they're willing to consider archival releases. Hopefully we'll get more things like that in the next few years.
Songs of Surrender and Reassemble had enough new music and lyrics that I've been counting those as new albums to make the wait since Experience less depressing. as long as the new album is better than Atomic City I'm okay lmao
I actually listened to the Atomic Bomb re-release today at the gym - some of those songs are fantastic
