I remember hearing Yonkers and was like “Damn, this is dark and cool. Who made this?!” and after that, I found the Odd Future tapes and became a fan.
Also, OF had such an impact on hip hop in the time they were around. Didn’t change the game but they were savvy as hell using the internet to promote themselves and a lot of kids got into hip hop through them by OF just being in all these different subcultures. A lot of rappers of their ilk owe them thanks for paving the way for them too.
I remember being terrified of this track and other early Tyler/Earl stuff and feeing like maybe I shouldn’t be listening to it lol. But it was too compelling to resist coming back to.
That music video was also massive in them exploding as well. I remember everyone was head to toe in OFWGKTA Zumiez merch after Goblin dropped
I'd definitely argue that OF changed the game, both for the reasons you mentioned and sound wise, especially if you count the individual members' influence. Tyler is one of the biggest influences on a ton of the new generation, and Frank has been massively important to music as a whole
Classic album. Probably wouldn't age well at all if you were to listen to it for the first time in 2021 but when it came out it (along with Bastard and the other early OF stuff) felt really groundbreaking
Yeah, it was truly something when that came out, like it felt like what grunge was at the end of the hair metal era. You had all this mainstream pop rap that was popular and here comes OF and Tyler on a wrecking ball with some truly dark but catchy shit. OF as an entity was definitely influential on hip hop in the 10’s imo.
