Flower Boy is legitimately no skips but I could see this one rivaling CMIYGL for my number two spot. I wouldn't say he's a GOATed lyricist but I think he's a GOATed hip-hop artist. Really kind of splits the difference between the old Kanye's vision for projects with specific identities and Andre's general weirdness/fondness for pop
I only like this and the 3 most recent prior, I dont know where id put this yet but igor CMIYGL Flower
Okay I am all in on "Balloon" now, this is the most joyous shit I've heard since "Runaway," so fucking fun
Flower Boy IGOR Call Me If You Get Lost Chromakopia Wolf Goblin Bastard Cherry Bomb My journey with Tyler’s music has been important for me. I too was a young edgelord who eventually navigated my sexuality and gender. Flower boy was a big reason for me being visible. For me, you can ignore the earlier work but it’s important for the development of him as a person.
some great production on this, kinda torn on the actual contents. a few standouts on first listen, definitely never need to hear "sticky" again
Also crazy to.think about Goblin being at/near the bottom of my ranking considering how much I listened to that album in high school. Changed a lot of shit for me and kind of showed me things I didn't know were possible in music. Ngl "Yonkers" still goes pretty fucking hard. But yeah, just goes to show how much he's grown as an artist.
I was a little worried about it not being available by the time I got to listen, but apparently not worried enough to actually order in time haha
Tyler is good and I’ve followed him his entire career but idk if I’m in love with any of his releases. He’s always someone I’ll check out, enjoy for a bit, and then never go back to. This was fine. The beat on Balloon was dope. I guess a nicer way to say that is I like him more as a person/his influence/his trajectory than I do for the actual music. Not that any of it is bad.
Okay so I've been a huge fan of him literally since OF started getting big but this is actually the WEAKEST impression an album of his has made on me on first listen since probably Cherry Bomb. That's not to say I don't like it, there are some really fantastic songs on here that are some of his best work ever (Noid, Darling I, Hey Jane, Take Your Mask Off, Like Him) but as a cohesive unit, it didn't fully work for me. Usually he has SUCH a united vision/aesthetic with every release that really adds a ton to the worlds of the albums for me but I really didn't think the majority of this even really fit with the military/cargo crate/creepy mask aesthetic that he's going for much at all. Usually his albums sound just like the cover/videos but I'm really not sure I think that's the case here yet, but the visuals are obviously still beautiful and well-made so I'll keep paying attention and maybe that part will click for me I also think this is the first time that I haven't felt genuine progression between albums by him; most of these songs sound like they could have been on one of his last three albums. This is fine though, it's unrealistic to expect that kind of insane musical growth every single time... the songs are still really good and this is also some of his best and most personal writing ever. Like Him was especially insane if you've been following him for like a decade, I never thought I would hear a song about his father like that This post is kinda me contextualizing my thoughts in real time I guess lol. I definitely like it a lot and still think he's one of the talented and creative mainstream artists in hip-hop... I guess the last couple just set the bar a little high for me on first listen. Can't wait to listen more and have it grow on me like crazy and look back at this post like I was nuts
Flower Boy Wolf Igor Call Me Bastard Cherry Bomb Goblin new album is somewhere in the top 5 not sure where yet
this is exactly where I’m at, I listen to his new stuff a few times and enjoy it but never come back to it
Flowerboy is so clearly his best for me that even the loosie singles he dropped the year after it are top tier
I was going back through all the singles and I forgot he did that run of just rapping on other peoples beats and god I wish he did it again
my complete no nonsense conspiracy is Tyler is going to release more “test pressings vinyl” and they are going to have other cut features it sounds like a cool idea even if it’s just a fantasy
