also the Bowie scene gets absolutely cut to ribbons in the final edit too, full version of that or bust
Surprise Twin Peaks in the wild! Saw My Chemical Romance tonight and the opener was Garbage, and Garbage came out onstage to Laura Palmer’s theme!
Started a rewatch with my girl (she’s never seen it). So excited to go through again, especially for season 3
Attended the Conversation with the Stars event last night at a small venue that was not even half-full. Dana Ashbrook (Bobby), Harry Goaz (Andy), Kimmy Robertson (Lucy), Ray Wise (Leland), and Sabrina Sutherland (exec producer) were all there. Apparently Jennifer Lynch was supposed to go but had some conflict. first they had a screening of season 3 episode 8, then a Q&A session with the host, then a shorter Q&A with the audience. At the end they had a tribute video for David with a lot of behind-the-scenes production footage which got all the cast teary-eyed. There was a VIP option for a meet-and-greet but I didn’t go to that part. Overall an amazing experience. It was such a joy seeing the cast interact as friends. They’re all really just their characters. Kimmy Robertson was so Lucy-like that it was surreal. She kept going on silly little tangents lol. Ray Wise sang Mairzy Doats. Fantastic merch as well—got myself two shirts lol. Whole thing made me miss David a lot. Another thing—the venue was on a street called White Horse Pike. Thought that had to be fate.
Just caught Lost Highway in theaters as Philly is doing a Lynch retrospective til the end of the year, and my fuck what a great film. My second time seeing it and it was way better than my first.
First time I saw Lost Highway and Inland Empire was in theaters and really helped me lock in to those
on a slightly related note, just learned my local indie theater is gonna be showing the entirety of TP S1 in 2-3 episode batches every week during November, and i suspect the other seasons and FWWM will follow. edit: went to see Frankenstein at this theater yesterday, and they're gonna be showing season 2 in January and February, FWWM in March, and S3 in May. definitely can't make it to all of these, but i'm tempted to go to a couple.
wow, I'm sure there are a handful of s1-s2 episodes that will look beautiful on the big screen. s3 is more self-evident (it will obviously look glorious) and I don't think the first two have received that same treatment
watched FWWM last night with my wife. it was her first time seeing it and she was gutted Sheryl Lee's performance might actually be the greatest of all time. her line deliveries had me crying at least three times. seeing the angel greet Laura at the end, my god... that moment is eternal now to see (some of) The Return in theaters this weekend
I really haven't felt anything quite like what I felt from episode 8 of The Return. I enjoyed the first seven episodes but it was hard to understand what the point of all of it was and if maybe Lynch had lost his touch after not making anything for over a decade, but then that episode just blew everything away. After that it all made sense and the return of Dale Cooper sent chills down my spine.
Just came back from seeing 5-8 in theaters. And “That Fucker” Ray did a short q&a afterward. Awesome awesome experience.
Just caught the documentary about Catherine Coulson in theaters as part of the Lynch series they're doing - I Know Catherine, the Log Lady. I loved learning more about her, her dysfunctional marriage to Jack Nance (did not know about this), her prolific stage acting career, and especially her final scenes in The Return, which apparently was her last, dying wish. The massive coordination effort to make it happen is inspiring. Truly beautiful stuff and great stories told from David himself--puffing on his cigarette yet again. Unfortunately, the film had some of The Sloppiest editing I've ever seen on a "finished" documentary. It literally felt amateurish, and gave my wife and me headaches. All this despite both of us being moved to the point of tears by the stories themselves. All that said, I'd say still worth checking with that low expectation in mind. She deserved a better tribute for sure, but learning about her life was interesting.
My wife and I finished The Return tonight. It was her first time through the whole series start to finish, and she really liked it! I think the first few episodes of The Return threw her off, as they tend to do, but she came around to loving it. Maybe my third time watching it through. And it just touched my heart all over again.
