Lara Flynn Boyle is unbelievable in every scene she’s in. I don’t think I realized until now how accomplished an actress she is even in the earliest episodes.
First season is so great. Been listening along to the Diane podcast while rewatching, which I’d def recommend to anyone looking for a good one. It’s wild to think how much this show evolves from here because by the end of s1, it’s still (mostly) grounded in reality—just barely laying out the foundation for the metaphysical stuff.
Original run Twin Peaks and then Fire Walk With Me-The Return are about as extreme a turn as you can take. The original run hid a lot of Lynch's intentions behind the veneer of network television and then once it was free it went wild. It was genuinely surprising how much of season three was based on the movie rather than the original show run.
While this is true, season two seems to immediately test its viewers. It opens with an (incredible) extremely long and surreal scene, scored with that signature Lynchian drone, where an elderly waiter offers warm milk to a dying Cooper, ignores his gunshot wound, repeatedly says “I’ve heard about you!” before leaving and re-entering (twice) to give a thumbs-up. All before a giant appears in a vision. Super unusual stuff right off the bat.
S2 E7 is one of the best episodes of television ever, just rewatched it today. Unbelievable tension throughout the whole episode. The buildup and the sequence of the reveal is so thrilling, from Sarah’s hand sliding down the stairs, to the record player skipping. The ambience at the Roadhouse. Maddy’s death scene is horrific and captures a terror you still don’t see often in tv. While The Return deservedly gets most of the praise now, a lot of the original series still holds up to the best of it.
Peter Deming Shares New Details of David Lynch’s Unrecorded Night sounds like the Unrecorded Night series would've been considered part 4 of Lynch's unofficial LA saga (Lost Highway, Mulholland Dr, Inland Empire). script supposedly took three sittings to read through (the same way that The Return's script was 550 pages long).
David Lynch's Producer Talks Unreleased Project ‘Unrecorded Night’ if Sabrina is saying we might get it in some capacity, that's a really good sign. she calls it the best thing he ever worked on.
The end to the s2 finale is so deeply upsetting, I’ll never get over that that is how they left viewers off. Insanely courageous tv.
Her performance of “No Stars” in s3 may be the best TP performance of them all. I cry every time I watch the “Llorando” scene in Mulholland Drive. RIP.
Dumb question: Is Judy the Experiment that unleashed the BOB and the Laura orbs? If so, she was created from the bomb in 1945, but I thought Judy is older than that. And why would she expel a Laura orb is she’s evil? if they’re different entities, was the Experiment born from the bomb and that’s why it’s called the experiment?
Not dumb, but I think trying to define things that explicitly in a Lynch story is a trap. Mark Frost might disagree, but that’s how I best enjoy this stuff. I personally think Judy is black magic related to the evils of human passivity. BOB enters this dimension via Judy, specifically the core American instance of great evil, and the Giant in the White Lodge releases “Laura” as a counterpoint (something like that)
Finally watched the Twin Peaks episode of Psych and holy crap the writers/team loved TP and it really shows. So many tiny references and love all the returning cast members. Can’t recommend it enough.
I’ve been playing a game Lorelei and the Laser Eyes and it has so much TP influence all over it. Very cool to see
Now we need a 4k Twin Peaks Complete set. Or even better, a whole David Lunch Criterion set. I would guess we might see one some day...
if they do a full set, it probably won't include Dune (given his disavowal of the film). and as much as i'd love a full Twin Peaks boxset, i think it's currently wishful thinking to do the entire series in 4K when only a small number of classic shows have received the UHD treatment.
Yeah that’s what I am doing, dreaming lol. I know the TP A to Z set exists but I’ve heard numerous complaints about the packaging and the discs falling out? I’m content streaming the episodes from a hard drive for now. I am super pumped though for the FWWM 4k.
Been rewatching with a friend who has never watched. Currently in the "dog days" stretch....can't wait to get to the finale, FWWM, and to crack open my s3 Blu set again. Idk if this counts as a hot take, but I hate the fan edits of FWWM. The Missing Pieces is cool on its own as a fun optional addition.
that one fanedit was the first way i watched both films, but i agree that they work better as standalone companion films, particularly re: pacing
