I think you’ve perfectly articulated the reasons I wasn’t feeling the singles, I missed the optimism of their old songs, and it wasn’t until I heard the entire record that I understood I was actually just longing for a return to the world of those songs where optimism was possible, a world that feels so far away right now. After my first listen my overwhelming thought was that this record was so entirely of its moment that it could be the soundtrack to a generation, the last time I felt that so strongly was when I first heard Thursday’s War All The Time. Indeed, I expected that WATT would end up the defining soundtrack of its era and I was confused for a long time as to why it didn’t, but thinking on it with time I realised that often there are albums that are too much of a mirror and make us uncomfortable with what they reflect back at us; it obviously doesn’t diminish their quality or profundity but it does diminish their popularity. It’s early days but I think this record could well end up being one of those.
I don't know how I feel about this. I don't hate that it's heavy but I want some more hooks. There are some great moments on here, Captagon especially. This might be a grower for me. TWIABP is one of my favorite bands and I'm sure I'll listen to this a lot more times.
After two runs through I’m very surprised at how much I love this. Like, of all the new music that came out today I wanna return to this one the most. I’ve always liked the band but never really fell for them the way I did some of their contemporaries. But this full on dive into post-hardcore with progressive tendencies (and even veering to Metalcore at times) is extreeeeeeemely my shit. I already said some of it sounds like TREOS but listening again I really started to hear like, from autumn to ashes and stuff like that in it. Maybe even some as cities burn
Too many messages to like/quote RE: Captagon. That's my early favourite after just the one spin so far.
idk just started this but the first song feels like a new level for them so far, killer stuff don't think it's that huge a pivot as some people are saying, it's like they kept building off the ending of We Saw Birds Through The Hole In The Ceiling
big fan of this album! i think beware the centrist had me ready for a bigger pivot than this is but i also prefer every other song here over it so it worked out lol, think this is a really cool development of some of the stuff from the last record while figuring out how to bear an ample amount of teeth. ending of captagon was nuts. too early to tell where itll stack up to the last album but it def reaches the standard also i was really confused by them touring with between the buried and me when the bill was announced but this has tons of btbam influence so i get it now lol
from what i've heard so far i feel like a lot of the clean vocals have awkward melodies and don't fit the style of this record but i also don't listen to that genre a whole lot so maybe it's common.
listening again today I think my biggest gripe with this is that Bello's vocals don't work so well over the heavy parts, they had the perfect balance on IW but it can almost sound silly at a few points on here almost wish more of this was just harsh vocals and it was heavier overall because I'm not hearing a super big departure on most of the songs. still enjoy it for what it is though
been sitting on this for a week and it's really starting to click. oubilette into captagon is spectacular.
ive honestly in the past not really been this bands biggest fan outside of songs here and there but ive been really drawn to their discog lately, not even really this album (it is very good tho) but harmlessness and illusory walls are both such entrancing albums that have never hooked me the way they are now. think im gonna hit that btbam tour
I’ve listened to a handful of songs so far and I’m liking it a lot. I need to find time to listen to the full album.
I went to pick this up at my local record store and realized both this and Pool Kids had vinyl delayed to October. Bummer because I bet both would have done pretty big numbers for each band given the reception.
