A lot of the teasing leading up to the album, as well as a few other things, point to this being related to the world of Trench. The album title itself is an anagram of the phrase “Clancy is Dead” which definitely points toward the Trench lore and the logo for this album mirrors the “East is Up” E from Trench.
Here’s the link to the press release. Fairly certain this is in the world of Trench/Blurryface. Twenty One Pilots Announce New Album
If you've not gone back to Vessel already, I'd encourage it. Trench is unparalleled in terms of production, but I think Vessel contains their best work lyrically and I think just contains their best songs, even though I get why the rapping is a turnoff. Blurryface is quite easily the weakest of the three IMO.
Agreed but Blurryface is still a great album. Heavydirtysoul, Ride, Tear in My Heart, Doubt, Polarize, WDBWOTV, and Hometown are all great songs
Blurryface is one of those rare albums where the last four songs are all it’s best to me. I think the whole thing is great, but Message Man to Goner is a string of some of their most underrated songs ever.
can't revisit vessel bc of this exact reason re: blurryface, i love "tear in my heart," though, great song
i actually did revisit vessel today, which i seem to love or hate depending on the song. i do NOT like "screen," and feel like "holding on to you" has way too many bad decisions in it even though there's a solid song in there somewhere. "ode to sleep," "semi-automatic," "guns for hands," "trees"... pretty solid set of songs i.... also seem to like blurryface more than i remembered, but i just started it. "heavydirtysoul" best song ever. "fairly local" enters a trip-hop space that i completely adore
That's so interesting. "Holding On To You" and "Car Radio" are my favorite TOP songs ever and "Fairly Local" is about my least favorite (I still enjoy it). I also prefer the rapping on Vessel to the rapping on "Heavydirtysoul," although I think it's a great song overall. I think his rapping is objectively great all over Trench though. Especially "Levitate". I know you're a huge mewithoutYou fan so this obviously doesn't apply to everyone, but Tyler's brand of rapping on Vessel really worked for me as someone who listened to more spoken word than rap at the time. Vessel was like the second coming of Brother, Sister for me in the way it introduced me to something totally new that totally confused me until I fell in love with it (it's not as brilliant as B,S but it gave me the same excitement). That said, I wonder how I would have felt about it had I discovered it after getting into Kendrick, J Cole, Saba, etc.
i think "car radio" has an amazing backing but i can't get with the rap at all. i like your connection to the record though!!!!
I love that this band has such a wide variety of styles because there’s so many different types of songs that are going to appeal to different people. There are some HOT takes in this thread
Incredible track, Sounds extremely similar to a redefined version of their earlier material with RAB.
New track “Choker” is out tonight at midnight. It’s out in parts of the world already... Pretty good song I think. It gave me Regional at Best vibes actually. Can’t wait for this album, I really like this direction.
