You know, I am confused. I was always told that sound bars cannot turn on from sleep mode via optical cable. My living room doesn't. However, my newer soundbar in my bedroom automatically turns on any time I turn on my TV, with any remote, even with HDMI CEC being what turns it on.

Both sound bars are from Vizio and connected with optical. Both TVs are LG OLEDs, just a C2 vs a B4 - they even have the same remote.

My living room setup is Apple TV into the CX LG audio through my Sonos sound bar. Everything controlled by my Apple Remote. One thing I’m really hating is while watching YouTube content the screen resolution will flicker out and then change as not all content can be displayed in Dolby vision or whatever format. More of an Apple tv issue I think. But it’s so annoying.

Yeah iirc LG TVs (and I imagine others) flicker to black when switching between SD/DV/HDR, so you're going to see some of that when you set a streaming device to match content video format or w/e that setting is called

Same thing happens when my PS5 or Switch 2 pull up HDR content

this is correct for other TVs with HDR and high refresh rates too. with the Switch 2 port of Cyberpunk, quality mode runs at 40 FPS, so my TV upscales the picture to 1440p HDR10 and plays the game at 120 Hz. whenever these settings are enabled or disabled, the TV flickers to the appropriate setting.

The real annoying thing I noticed was on Android TV boxes (I think it's patched now), Plex would downgrade the screen content to SDR when you would pull up the on-screen controls and then flip back to HDR/DV when you made them disappear. So any time I wanted to fast forward or rewind, the damn screen would turn black for a second lol

Stoked. Got my settings all tuned up. 4K SDR doesn’t make the screen flicker when viewing different content and such.

odd question, but anyone have any experience with modern universal remotes? looking for something fairly programmable for my TV, Google TV Streamer, soundbar, and Blu-ray player. the CEC on my TV hasn't worked quite right for a bit, and i feel like i have to use multiple remotes to do what should easily be done by one.

for example: turning on the TV with the TV remote turns on the soundbar, but doesn't automatically trigger the Streamer, and doesn't generally let me use the volume buttons on that remote. using the remote for the Streamer should ideally turn on and control everything, but because both it and my TV run different versions of Google TV, i can't do anything beyond simply turning on the box and controlling volume (despite volume control, i have to manually turn on the soundbar as Google's remote won't). even trying to set the customizable button on the Streamer remote to switch between HDMI inputs (like you could do with the last model of Chromecast) has never been an option for me. it's something TCL specific, i believe.

i'm hoping i could just consolidate everything into one remote at this point, maybe even program specific functions for multiple devices with one button, maybe even voice search. i know lots of people swore by the Logitech Harmony line of remotes, but they're no longer manufactured, sold, or updated. other sites keep recommending a different brand called Sofabaton, but their options are either pricey, sold out, or have widely mixed reviews. it would be great if there was one option to meet my needs, but so far, i'm not having great luck.

Hmm I just use my Google TV Streamer or Apple TV remotes for everything except for when a software update pops up in LG WebOS. Their remotes even control my Vizio soundbars automatically through IR. Curious if others have good suggestions that I could try, too, though.

It does sound like your use case is advanced enough to require a full fledged system akin to Harmony, so, with that being said, Sofabaton is really the only competitor with a serious option. I know there are a few others, but they're all far less reliable than Sofabaton. I have a Harmony on its last legs and I keep coming close to pulling the trigger on the Sofabaton, but I haven't quite been able to commit yet.

Your other option would be to buy a used Harmony on eBay (though, given their fan base and scarcity, this isn't exactly a cheap option either.) The remotes are no longer updated or officially supported, but it's pretty likely that you'd still be able to get everything working - the app and software still runs, they just no longer update the code database. I haven't had any issues adding and maintaining devices on mine because IR codes don't really change all that much. Generally speaking, codes from XX branded TV 5-10 years ago are almost certainly the same as their codes for 2026 models.

anyone have experience with HLG calibration? realized it was the one HDR mode i ever calibrated, and setting it identical to other HDR modes makes it look super washed out

  11. @Aaron Mook, just remembered that I still wanted to know more about the projector you picked up!

  12. (sorry if projector talk in the TV thread is sacrelige lol wasn’t sure where else to go with it)

  13. Oh yeah! It's a Happrun H1 projector. I think it was like $85 maybe on sale? HDMI and USB input, claims you can cast to it as well but I believe it's either wired or has to be an iPhone. Either way, I've used it twice (blu-ray player once and laptop another time) and so far, so good. Rear-projection capabilities and all that jazz. It's not like a crazy 4k projector or anything, but seems to be a solid place to start and serves my/our purposes well. Let me know what you want to know!

Word! No that’s pretty much all I was looking for, just a name and thoughts haha. I bought a real cheap one as a sort of proof of concept like a year ago, now that I’ve used it enough I’m starting to look into more long term options
