It’s about that for me too, but I couldn’t pass it up this time. It’ll be nice to have a portable monitor. I think or at least hope it’ll come in handy haha

any recommendations for a great quality 55" 4K TV that a) is preferably not edge-lit, b) isn't running Fire TV or Roku TV OS (and potentially not Google either since i wanna plug in my Google TV streamer), and c) is less than $1,000?

55" LG B4 OLED is $999.99 at Best Buy, so that's a penny less ;) haha

OLED is definitely going to be better, but I've heard great things about both the TCL and Hisense FALDs. I believe they're Google-based, but you can just not connect them.

The only thing I'd worry about with those brands is upscaling and motion, but, if you're not super prone to noticing that stuff, it's probably no big deal at all.

i've looked at one of the newer TCL mini LED TVs on Consumer Reports and it's got surprisingly good reviews. i've looked into LG as well and have a few cheaper (albeit not super cheap) options, but it's a bit pricey despite its great reputation. ideally i'm just looking for something better than Samsung's 2022 AU8000 (my old TV), because i hear Samsungs are notorious for backlight issues (the thing that killed our old TV). plus despite its adoption by select streamers and studios, i'd like to forego HDR10+ as a dynamic HDR format and look for something with Dolby Vision, since it's more supported.

Yeah Dolby Vision is great and I get bummed when I put something on and an HDR logo pops up in the corner of my screen instead of DV haha

i'm honestly not a huge HDR snob, i'm fine with regular HDR10 (although HDR wasn't good on my old TV so maybe a new one will change my mind(. but i'd like to test out DV across all of my 4K discs that have it. i know Prime and P+ (neither of which i subscribe to anymore) have HDR10+, and i think one show i watched on P+ used HDR10+ and it looked pretty damn nice on my old TV, but that's clearly not the standard everyone else seems fine licensing, so i'd like to see what all of the fuss is about if i have media with it embedded

I would definitely go for one of the full array TCLs or Hisense over any LG LED. I really don’t think there’s much that beats those from a value proposition perspective.

If you don’t mind searching around a little, especially at Costco or Sam’s Club, I’d definitely see if you can find a C4 or B4 OLED on clearance (unless you want to just run with the readily available $999 B4.) If that fails, I think the TCL or Hisense will be the best bang for your buck.

I agree with Samsung’s lack of DV being a huge bummer. DV has its problems, but the fact that a major manufacturer is just stubbornly refusing to implement it in favor of their own (far less developed) alternative makes them pretty much last resort, especially when their actual good TVs come at a premium.

Samsung has always been the worst of the big boys in terms of motion, too. So, there’s virtually no reason to buy a low to mid range Samsung in 2025 when the cheaper brands do literally everything the same or better. Really, the only TVs they make that I think are worth their weight are the QD-OLEDs.

the TCL i'm contemplating is the 2025 QM7K. seems like it ticks off a lot of boxes and does it all for under $700. our Best Buy only has 1 left, but i wanna see what my partner thinks too.

the LGs i was looking at were either mini LED (or QNED as they call it, i think) or OLED. OLED might be out of my budget at the moment unfortunately, but the B4 is the cheapest LG TV i've found that actually does DV (everything else uses a proprietary "HDR Pro" system).

i'd contemplate shopping for a TCL at Sam's Club since i have a membership, but unfortunately the closest location is in Cedar Rapids, which is a half hour drive that i don't know when i'm gonna get to make. i could see if they'd deliver it if they have it. there is a Costco in town, but i'm not looking to join at this time.

Use greentoe to at least compare. I got a good deal on my c4 by going through them and “naming” my price

Yeah, Greentoe is great. Unfortunately, last I looked, they were out of both the C4 and B4. It doesn't look like they have the newer TCLs (or Hisense, for that matter) available, either.

Dolby Vision question. the TCL QM7K comes with several different types of DV loaded - Bright, Dark, Game, and IQ. i calibrated all the other settings on the TV based on what RTINGS listed (although i don't like excessive warmth in my color temperature, so i set it to "normal" instead of all the way "warm" like they recommended). with DV, however, the only setting i've really messed with it turning off motion smoothing. i currently have it on IQ and felt it was mostly fine when watching Alien: Earth last night. but i hear some people hate it and prefer Bright or Dark, depending on the context. any experience with the format or calibration recommendations?

I think you'd need someone with a similar TCL to chime in, since every manufacturer implements and labels things a little differently, even though DV is a standard. If we don't have any around here, I'd take a quick look in the AVS Forums - there's usually a good bit of info in the owner's threads over there. I've used it a lot as a resource:
