the songs rule - they are thoroughly Turnstile songs and just a nice progression from record to record
I think this band has always been pretty overrated, and just doesn't hit with me. That said, it's really cool to see all the hype for a new album cycle. All the videos for this have been super well done, and I want to call out the shot at 5:21 in the new video. The framing with the sound pulse and the singer jumping is so so cool.
if you never vibed with Turnstile then the new songs aren't gonna change your mind and that's fine - the confusing part to me are Turnstile fans not vibing with these songs when they are just so purely what the band does well.
Are we looking for growth or continually, that’s what it comes down to. Each fan has to answer that themselves.
if it was much different, people would be saying, "i wish they were pushing that Glow On vibe more... oh well." but they're pushing the Glow On vibe some more, and now people are bored of it, i guess? this happens with any band's album, i feel like. it's fine.
exactly. You need to decide on where you fall into that, I think it’s different for each band. case in point today, new NFG sounds like NFG and that’s what I want. I don’t personally want the same sonic feeling from Glow On from Turnstile but that’s just me
I just flatly reject the premise that there's zero "growth" in the three songs we've heard, let alone knowing there's still 11 more to come. A lot of the growth between the last two albums was they doubled down on melody and tried some interesting things in the mid-tempo range. Going further in that direction in "Seein' Stars" I can easily see as being called "growth." Playing a song from Non Stop or Time & Space and then any of these three would easily show "growth." The album after your commercial breakthrough is probably not going to be an entire reinvention of your sound. And given what people have said about the new album, that it's an "elevated Glow On", I think it's not only reasonable to expect that, but elevating one of the best albums of the last like decade is good, and cool, and I have no problem calling it "growth."
From a quick look at social media it looks like the majority are very very very excited/happy/stoked on it. I've seen very little negativity outside of this thread actually.
It's also funny that people will complain about lack of growth, or whatever bullshit, then turn around and praise countless bands in other threads who do a variation of the same thing album after album (not saying this is bad, just ironic!)
also it's funny because we are kind of seeing it with Lorde in a way. People didn't like Solar Power but you could argue that it showed a lot of "growth" from Melodrama and now for her next album cycle people are stoked that it's Melodrama part 2 haha
Depends on where the artist is on their career IMO. I want NFG to sound like classic NFG, I want Turnstile to keep forging new paths. I also don’t want Brat 2.0 from Charli. Is what it is
This band is at their best when they’re doing the genre, as expected, better than anyone else while sprinkling in something different. IMO glow on sprinkled in a little bit too much. Birds hit like a song off of time & space and that’s exactly what I want. I was worried for a second, but when Birds came in, I couldn’t remember why.
The grouchiness of them not changing enough is a head scratcher to me. They have been doing the same thing since they dropped their first record. It is a deepening and refining every release, the fact that a punk band has permeated pop culture and maintained their ethos is completely insane. To have Charlie XCX shoutout you out at a major music fest and have a new single drop today that could be lifted off your second record from a decade ago with better production and visuals is WILD to me. They have been given a platform to share this genre and DIY spirit to planet earth and everyone is watching. What is there not to be completely excited about? Also these three singles have radical range to them.
i like these songs and definitely think they represent artistic growth but to say there has been little to no negativity is just willfully ignoring the hardcore community, with a lot of people who never accepted glow on, let alone these songs
The most impressive thing about Turnstile which is a hard feat for many bands to pull off is the fact that they have created their own unique sound and musical identity.
