  1. It’ll have competition from Manchester, Foxing , Hayley, Kacey and ETID too

Ehhhhh the JBREKKIE and Lucy Dacus records were very well received on here so those will be contenders too

AOTY dropped on the first day of the year and every album has just been swimming in its wake since.

    a. it’s weird to base an album’s worth entirely on how it compares to other albums released in an arbitrary 12 month window, such a massive disservice to art to view it in these terms
    b. an album is not slept on just because it doesn’t rank as high on said arbitrary list as yours

that’s what everyone says in every thread because every thread is based around the same exact conversation mere days after an album comes out lol.

that's true. it's either this or a band's catalogue rankings. wait five pages and the album rankings will begin again.

it’s just an exhausting cycle of conversation and fun or not I do feel like it’s a massive disservice to the albums coming out to automatically start arbitrarily placing it in competition with other albums that aren’t even remotely the same like that, I get it when the conversation dries up but if an album comes out on Friday you can guarantee the thread is talking about end of the year lists by Monday, like damn give the art some time to breathe, spend some time to live in it, become familiar, let it become a part of your world for a little bit. I feel like a lot of that gets lost in the fast paced rapid consumption model of music listening we’re all guilty of falling into it just gets out of hand a lot

It’s hard for me to care about AOTY talk because it’s so ingrained in me from this site, going back to the AP.net days. I stand by the fact that it’s ultimately pretty harmless, and clearly a lot of people enjoy it. That being said, there are definitely better conversations we could be having. And I wish we were having them, but it just doesn’t seem like the user base of this site is interested in that sort of thing.

This is tough for me and I don't want to come across as combative, because I totally agree with your point (I myself tried to steer this conversation to live shows earlier to no avail). However, I also think people should be able to discuss albums they enjoy in whatever way they want to that gets them excited about the band/music, even if that is in a not altogether helpful compare/contrast/ranking format. Like I'm not sure it's helpful to scold people for the particular way they enjoy media, particularly when it's in good spirits. Anyway, I don't really want to belabor the point because it is getting away from turnstile, so I promise I won't respond again unless it's about how radical the tunes are.

every time I say something I’m told it’s harmless and it’s fun but I don’t think it’s harmless or fun to watch music be devalued the way it is around here on a daily basis but maybe it’s just me. I’m not even trying to scold people really it’s just annoying and makes me wonder what happened to good productive meaningful conversations about music, it’s all but disappeared outside of my group chats and one on one convos I have with individuals

I probably just sound like old man yelling at cloud back in my day people gave a shit about music youths are poisoned by social media but am I wrong lol

anyway this album is fucking awesome I love the atmosphere of the production it elevates it beyond a typical hardcore sounding record but it still sounds huge

I do agree that I feel like an album comes out on Friday and by Monday people are either done talking about it or are already talking about things in the thread unrelated to the music itself. The one good thing I like about AOTY talk throughout the year is it exposes people to albums they were previously unaware of. Not sure if there's a better way to publicize those records for folks to check out.

Idk just telling people to check out records without attaching weird weighty expectations of “this is the best album of the year!!!” before someone even has a chance to hear it for themselves and all of a sudden if it doesn’t live up on first listen to these unfair expectations they’re less likely to go back

I think it works most of the time, but I do think it sounds cheesy on some of the tracks. I know I'm in the minority but "MYSTERY" just doesn't work for me. It's mostly that one, to be honest.
