Maybe they're just not a very good live band? Turnover is not dissimilar to Balance & Composure for me - great on record, terribly boring and flat live (not helped by the fact that neither vocalist can hit their notes live)
I’ve only seen Turnover once but they actually sounded great, and it was at this really bad venue that I try to avoid because basically no band sounds good there. It was during the PV cycle, though
I think you can make a really strong EP from this. Super Natural Sunshine Type Butterfly Dream Nightlight girl Breeze Bonnie (Rhythm & Melody) the rest of the tracks are just a bit bland I think. They need to add some pace or dynamics back into their sound like on Cutting My Fingers Off or Take My Head, I think.
I def don't miss them being pop punk. I miss them having good dynamics and turns of pace and generally just not writing 12 songs that have the same sound. PV had a ton of variations on the same theme, but it was fantastic. GN had no variations on a duller theme. I still like Good Nature, but it's a 7.5 for me.
Magnolia is a good pop punk album but PV is a much better record. Good nature was a hell of a risk imo. To me It’s very different in chord structure. Sonically very similar to PV but good nature has this lounge jazz harmony that people are going to think is either really cool or really boring ha. Bossa nova being an influence on the album is really evident to me. I’m fine with laid back performance live as long as they use those deliciously warm guitar tones.
+ Curiosity. I also really enjoy Pure Devotion, but I can understand that not being a favorite of the majority. It stinks these songs don't translate live, but it won't hinder my enjoyment of this album. I still think it's really good. PV musically was more energetic, but the lyrics are 100x better on this one. Also, if you can listen to Butterfly Dream and Bonnie and still say they don't write "hooky" music anymore... I don't know what to tell you.
I don’t get why people are so hyped over pop-punk Turnover when all their pop-punk stuff sounds like a TSSF carbon copy.
Curiosity is decent actually. Bonnie is easily my favourite GN song, but I actually don't find the lyrics on GN to be that amazing most of the time.
I just like the lyrics that are more introspective and about trying to better yourself than the ones about all the girl problems on PV.
I don't think any of their music sounds like TSSF. Although I don't listen to any pre-Magnolia other than the citizen split.
My thoughts here: -can confirm they were also boring live during the magnolia days -they’ve gotten better but shiver might still be their best song -GN’s lyrics are largely really boring -PV is probably their best and most well rounded but also has some stinkers -what got in the way, pure devotion, and Bonnie have the best choruses on GN
Butterfly Dream, Curiosity, and Bonnie are my top 3 choruses. Breeze right behind those, but I find this a pretty catchy record all the way through. EDIT: also, Breeze seems like it's the closest to PV in terms of style and lyrics.
most of this is right, but sunshine type is the catchiest song on GN. and all of their lyrics are bad to mediocre
Ah I forgot to add curiosity. Lyrics weigh that one down a bit for me, but the whole things catchy as hell.
I feel like it’s hard to say PV has bad lyrics when so many people connected so hard to the lyrics on that album. Are they poetic? No. Are there cheesy lines? Yes, but if people are connecting to it then arnt they doing what they set out to do? I don’t think people are connecting with good nature lyrics nearly as well, bc the narrative isn’t as clear. Could be wrong though.
people can relate to bad lyrics tho. i never saw this band doing anything more than just total, poorly written cheese. doesn't mean people can't connect to it
idk I actually think its pretty difficult to write simple and catchy lyrics that still connect with people.
