Between PV and GN, there could be two great EPs, or a rad LP. The material is so static between both works that I feel like the better parts of each get lost.
it took me a few listens to grow because i also thought it was insanely repetitive and one-note but the more i listened, the more vocal melodies i found that i liked. particular favorites are the choruses of what got in the way and pure devotion, verses of curiosity, and pre-chorus and chorus of bonnie.
I will say, I like these songs individually well enough. Like, I liked each single when they came out. And I wouldn't skip any of these songs if they came on shuffle. I just have a hard time getting through this as album. (which is the primary way I listen to music)
i've become much more of a full album listener and i never shuffle across artists or use playlists but i'l shuffle this one a lot and let me play count guide the order.
To be fair, the drumming on PV is just as repetitive. Almost every verse is just 16th notes and snares on 2 & 4.
Yeah, honestly the drumming holds this band back for me a decent amount. I’m repeating myself at this point, but maybe if they were mixed differently/lower it wouldn’t bother me as much.
I had heard a few songs off PV before this but didn't consider myself a Turnover fan. But I love this album and I had to check out PV. I think this is miles above that album. I was genuinely surprised when a few of my friends said the loved PV and found this album boring.
Never in my life has drumming been a reason why I've disliked music. Probably the same for the opposite. Not something I consciously notice I guess.
One of those things you don’t consciously listen for but once it’s pointed out, it’s all you can think about.
Drumming typically enhances my enjoyment of music more than it detracts from it, but I’ve had some of both. I am a drummer, though.
Drumming can completely enhance the music and if it is lame and repetitive, it is felt (at least subconsciously)
I always thought the drumming on this record wasn't very flashy or technically impressive, but the songs don't necessarily call for anything more than what they have so I don't really mind. blink-182 is probably one of the few bands for me where the drumming is one of the things I most enjoy about that band. And that's just because of Travis, obviously. Don't really consciously look out for it when I listen to pretty much any other band.
you must have never listened to the cloud nothings record or an example probably more for you, saosin. that band would have zero good music without the drumming
Any instrument can potentially either detract or enhance my enjoyment of an album or song. In fact if the roles were reversed and, say, the album’s guitar work were as repetitive and boring as the drums are, I’d like it even less. That said, I am a musician so that probably is part of why I tend to notice/be affected by those details more than some others might. It’s not even that I dislike the album tho, I’ve listened to it a TON and it’s made for some great driving music while working for Lyft... it just doesn’t hold up as well under more critical, focused listens is all.
If I had one compliant about it, I wish it had a few faster paced songs like PV did. Love the dreamy vibe of this one but give me something like Cutting My Fingers Off.
