Listened to this a few times through, I think it's great. The span of "What Got in the Way" through "Pure Devotion" is amazing. Bonnie is probably my favorite song on this thing though, only songs I am not too fond of yet are "Nightlight Girl" and "Living Small".
I can't wait to hear this. These reactions have me psyched because I wasn't as into the singles as I anticipated.
The singles work so well tied-in with the album as a whole. I appreciate them even more. But I have Pure Devotion on repeat now. Shameless. It's too sexy.
Having not heard the album, this is good to hear. I love PV, but the lyrics were weak in spots. Not really a big lyric guy though.
Lyrics are probably the biggest improvement here, along with melodies. Songs are much easier to differentiate between this time, and it's mostly because of Austin switching up melodies and his register more.
This album is insanely good. Only one listen down, but it seems like a natural progression, and step-up from PV.
I think Yip has done great work recently, people think those Title Fight/Citizen records when they like to complain about him, but his newer work (Menzingers, Tigers Jaw, new B&C) all sound great and fit the music well. I think Keep You by PBTT is still my favorite production job of his though.
Yea I originally pegged it as being a record I would like but not love, i think my original thoughts were wrong, I love this
It's kind of funny...I think I was on the vinyl collective forums the other day and someone was saying "I wonder when people are going to realize that Will Yip isn't that great," referencing his recent work. I freaking love the last Tigers Jaw album, it's my favorite by a mile. Anyways, I preordered but am still holding out (even though I downloaded the leak last night lol). I'm curious though, are there any references to Sasha on this album?
I think Will is a pretty dang good producer that happens to work with a ton of bands that I love. If those bands feel inspired to work with him time and time again he has to be doing something right.
He's a good engineer but an amazing producer. He brings out the best in a lot of the bands I love, and pushes them to be the best song writers they can be. His stuff always sounds good but I believe he has a great ear for recording and is not going to get better and better with time. It's fun bc he is also sort of growing with these bands, as they get better he's getting better. Turnover is a great example as he's been behind the wheel on all of their full lengths, magnolia to good nature shows true growth and they are all good for different reasons. I have a feeling we will be saying the same thing about citizen in a month.
The melodies in this are so good, Bonnie's chorus has been stuck in my head since I woke up. You know that's a mark of a good album when the first thought you have when you open your eyes is the song's chorus.
last 3 songs arent clicking with me completely yet. also, the most blatant real estate worship is going on in living small, but im still down with it.
Nightlight Girl is clicking with me hard today. I know everyone wants to talk about Brand New but this is actually out there, haha.
