Really want the lyrics to this Early favorites are What Got in the Way, Butterfly Dream, and Curiosity. What a run
it's still early but i feel like the lyrics on this are far stronger than the last. really romantic feeling record definitely, dropping a lot of the cheese from the last
Yeah I think it's amazing how different of a vibe they've achieved with this record. It's unmistakably a progression/evolution of the sound from PV but at the same time it feels like something totally separate. On first listen I . . . love this. A lot.
People shit on PV? Maybe I live in an echo chamber but like everyone I know that listens to Turnover cites it as their favorite thing from the band.
Elsewhere online I see a lot of people seemed to love PV and are saying this is good but not quite as good, after two listens I disagree, think this is much more mature both lyrically and musically. "All that it ever was" is the only one so far that stands out as weaker than the rest for me at the moment
For a while it seemed to get tons of shit on AP, I saw lots of backlash to it being high on lots of EOTY lists including the staff list
In terms of maturation, the lyrics are leaps and bounds over PV (which I thought had good lyrics anyway). Musically I think this one is far more interesting and unique.
Damn I didn't know that. Well, maybe this is just my gut reaction from being so high on this after the first listen but I think Good Nature has even edged out After The Party to take the number 2 spot on my running top ten of the year list. Could change but, like, I don't know this is really good. We'll see how it goes after I've lived with it for a week or two.
I mean, right now I prefer PV to this because I've listened to this twice haha. It's kinda dumb to compare them until this one really sinks in. I've had over two years with PV and have listened at least once per week in that time, it's going to take me a while to figure out how this one stacks up.
I agree, based on my very positive first impressions I think this will do very well on my list. Might be between this and ATP for #1 tbh.
I just meant from first blush re: the lyrics and sound, I like what they're doing here a lot. Also I only really just started listening to them a couple months ago haha so I don't have the same history that a lot of you all in here do with them. I'm having a really positive reaction to this right now though.
Oh yeah I wasn't responding to you, that was directed at the online people congruence was talking about
I never even got the "cheesy" vibe from PV, idk. I can't separate that album from how closely intertwined it was with my life for four solid months after it came out. I still love most of the lyrics on that thing and it takes me back to the time I first heard it unlike almost any other record. Because of that, I kinda doubt the band will ever release something I latch onto even more than that album. But who knows - this sounds really good and may play a similar role for me with more time.
First impression... didn't love this, didn't hate it. They definitely stepped it up instrumentally, can't really put my finger on why this didn't do much for me though. Got really bored about halfway in. Will be nice to hang by the pool with this to round out the summer, hopefully that'll help it to grow on me. Pure Devotion, Breeze, Living Small were my favorites on first listen
I really enjoy PV when I listen to it, but there’s nothing that ever really draws me back. After 2 listens of this, though, there are little things, melodically and lyrically, that make me want to listen again. We’ll see if that holds up over time. I think this is a great progression from the last record and Humblest Pleasures.
