Yeah I mean this isn't an original opinion or anything but the last track on an album should feel like a culmination, something that needs to be experienced in context after having gone through all the preceding tracks. Sequencing matters so damn much on an album and putting a song last isn't something that should be done lightly. I'll never understand why bands would want the last songs on their records to be released ahead of the album itself. I also won't be listening to the song until the 25th.
Releasing the opener or the closer before the album definitely isn't ideal, but the first two songs AND the closer is essentially a crime
i don't understand everyone's hatred for the opener being released, doesn't it make sense for the first song you hear to be...the first song??? i know there's some cases it doesn't make sense but if the song isn't like ~~very important moment~~ why not?
this is tough to explain but when I listen to an opener I want it to set up listening to a whole album for me... so like when I hear introduction to an album, I almost feel like I need to hear the rest of the record bc that's almost how I've always listened to it. I find that when I overplay the first song as a single I sort of lose that feeling, I try not to listen to singles more than once anymore so it doesn't matter either way I guess.
In some cases I don't mind, this album probably being a decent example, but openers like "The Maze" off the new MO album or "An Introduction" by The Hotelier I feel like are a lot more special to hear for the first when listening to the album as a whole
It definitely varies but yeah, I just enjoy the full album experience so much that I'd rather hear the opener as part of that experience. I think album openers tend to carry a lot of weight for an album (obviously not in all cases, but a lot) and hearing those first notes of the album for the first time is special experience for me. It's pretty inconsequential at the end of the day, but I do prefer hearing something other than the opener or closer as a single.
It's case-by-case for sure with openers but I honestly hate when bands release closers ahead of the album. Although I'm sure in a lot of cases the artist might not always have a say in what gets put out as a single so it's not always their fault either.
The closer is a bigger deal to me than the opener. I think it's only really weird to release the opener ahead of time if it's a situation like discussed above or if the opener is really stylistically different from the rest of the album (like if the opener is acoustic and the rest is a punk album or whatever). There, There comes to mind. Also you can just choose to not listen to the song ahead of time if it bothers you.
I'm confused...at the listening party, it looked as if you could buy it? Surely that's asking for...drip?
On one hand, I want the leak cause I want to hear this so badly, plus I already pre-ordered the album, but I always feel bad when it's a band I really love.
I downloaded the leak but I'm determined to hold out. I haven't heard a new album on release day for the first time in what feels like a bloody decade. I want this to be special. Maybe. I'm so conflicted
butterfly dream was almost spectacular but the chorus didn't quite hit the heights the verses were hinting at. really digging this so far though, very different state of mind from the last but i feel like it'll take up a very similar part in my listening as that did
Technically they already released the album by selling copies at the listening parties so you can listen
Not to make it worse, but this is really good so far....some new vocal melodies for them and guitars are really pretty
Album rules. This is the perfect "other side of the coin" to Peripheral Vision. Also, the first two tracks are definitely some of the weakest on the record.
