This is like, safely a top 5 production job for Will Yip too, right? The roomier sounds at the beginning of songs like Much After Feeling and Sending Me Right Back sound so crisp
I genuinely believe the albums Yip produces that sound a bit “off” are all based on what the bands want. Supersonic Home, As You Please, Forever, Die on Stage, After the Party, Pale Horses, Floral Green, Time & Space - These are all excellent sounding albums Yip’s done. Which gives me the impression that the bands are at fault when their album does sound “off.” Either that’s what they wanted it to sound like, or they’re not giving Will a good idea of what hey want it sound like. I don’t really care for the very low vocals on Hyperview, but I could definitely seei Title Fight wanting it to sound like that. I do however find Yip’s Instagram posts to be a bit redundant whenever he’s talking about a new album. Every single post is almost the same, just switch out the band names. He just says every album is a classic and their best, the songs are special and that they’re one of the most important bands ever. That’s cool if he genuinely believes that. But it doesn’t build hype when you say that same thing about every single album you work on.
I’m a bit surprised at how people like this but not Good Nature. They’re two sides of the same coin. Like @DarkHotline this is a nighttime record. Also they definitely kept the most interesting material for release day. Never knew how badly this band needs a full time sax player.
Yeah fwiw I wasn’t trying to imply that a job well done is an anomaly for him. Some of his records sound like total ass but he’s also got a ton of great stuff under his belt and I’d definitely argue he’s more hit than miss Anyway I can’t wait to play this on every single summer night forever
Very high and relaxed and this is quite enjoyable. I loved GN much more than PV (don’t kill me) and this is a nice progression. They may not be the most experimental or innovative band but they’ve maintained a nostalgic feel in their songs going all the back to the ep
yeah its fine on this record. its baffling on the new records from the menzingers, la dispute, and defeater though.
This is 100% accurate. The album isn’t done until the band is happy with it. I personally like most of what Will Yip does.
its a killer record but with such a lyrically and story driven album the buried vocals are truly hard to get past.
i think the bands are to blame some times. i also think will yip is an average to slightly above average producer who does some great work and some mediocre work.
Pre ordered vinyl from rough trade and it’s gonna take another week to get here I should have just gone with RFC.
Echoing most here. If you like Good Nature, seems you would like this. A bit more groovy. I like it. Need to spin it a bit more though. On first listens, i really like song 2 and 3. Ceramic Sky is sweet with the sax, wish the song was longer. Plant Sugar has a similar beat to a Kings of Leon song i cant place.
Good nature hinted at this sound with the almost bossa nova influence at time. They just took those parts and doubled down on it, I’m down with it. I think the guitar tones feel really fresh with this sound by using all the modulation effects .
really enjoying this. my impressions on first my few listenings is that it has fewer immediate stand-out songs like sunshine type and bonnie were on good nature, but as a whole album it stands up better than the previous album did. it finds the groove it wants and doesn't deviate from it, which is actually extremely satisfying in an album so chilled and relaxing. it feels like the night-time version of the sunny and summery sound they went for on good nature, which i love. overall, many grooves out of ten, would recommend
This is still getting better the more I listen to it probably an incendiary take but I would kill to see them say fuck PV altogether (pun intended) and play this front to back live. preferably in a tiny room with no pop punk bros in sight
