this did not disappoint. a delight nearly all around and i can’t help but suspect i’ll like it more with more to think about. the mouse ought to be ashamed that it reduced this to direct-to-D+
I liked the movie. And it’s a shame Disney pulled it from a theatrical release. But I would never waste the money to see a movie like this in imax.
a little item after the credits too. good thing about this being at home is you can fast forward the credits and be able to watch the whole thing in a little over an hour and a half
My wife and I both really enjoyed this a lot. It made us start to talk about Disney coming of age movies and we realized this has very similar themes to A Goofy Movie, just with a focus on the mother/daughter relationship rather than father/son.
The only issue I had with this film was a very quick plot shift towards the end, but the dynamic and themes were spectacular. Especially through the lens of the family a little side note, the family’s temple was exactly like the temple that I visited when I went to Beijing as a teenager, and it was so cool seeing that presented here. Loved the focus on the culture, as well as being derogatory of the harmful nature of some cultural stigmas, while showing that much of it comes from a place of love due to a learned generational response
I already saw one (trump voting) mom complain that it “sexualizes” the 13 year old girls because they talk about hot daddies or something? So far that’s the only complaint I’ve seen though lol
Watching with the kiddo, I’m really loving this. I wish more Western animation would utilize anime tropes and motifs.
Also, I know this got put on Plus because of Covid like Luca did and I kinda wonder how both of them would’ve done at the box office but at the same time, I kinda doubt this or Luca would’ve been big successes too. Being on Plus is more than fine imo, it probably would get more attention being the new movie on D+ versus like competing with The Batman or something.
Yeah, I’ve seen some conservative people I know mad that it acknowledges teens are interested in kissing and have things like periods. Absolute idiots.
This was fantastic! I’m loving these Pixar films that aren’t as “heavy”. Luca was the perfect summer afternoon watch and this was great as well. My favorite part was when Mei realized her mom was outside her class for the first time and it has a horror movie score for a split sec.
Part of me thinks that another reason Disney thought to punt this to streaming is due to the current lame company leadership freaking out about the subject matter tbh. But yea this of course was great. A real, "the more I think about it, the more I appreciate it" movie.
didn't feel like a "direct to streaming" movie, but it does feel like a slight especially given the subject matter.
I just think we're going to continue to see original stories hit streaming and tentpole / franchise movies hit the big screen. Been moving in that direction for a while now. Turning Red probably wouldn't make more than $400m in the theater, but Cars 7 can.
