Tumblr’s Unclear Future

Brian Feldman, writing at New York Magazine:

The future of Tumblr is still an open question. The site is enormously popular among the coveted youth crowd — that’s partly why then-CEO Marissa Mayer paid $1 billion for the property in 2013 — but despite a user base near the size of Instagram’s, Tumblr never quite figured out how to make money at the level Facebook has led managers and shareholders to expect.

I haven’t read a Tumblr blog regularly since Property of Zack closed down. I haven’t even logged into my account in quite a while now. What’s the main Tumblr use case these days?

There is that, although I predominantly use it to keep up with illustrators I'm interested in.

Please be kind. Like actually kind though.

This, and for my personal sense of humor Tumblr seems to pump out some of the best memes.

Tumblr is at its core a long-form blog platform and I think that's just missing in general from social media. At its peak it was a really easy way for artists to share their interests and occasionally the kind of long blog post that didn't work well on Twitter. Taylor Swift and Halsey come to mind as musicians who had big Tumblr accounts.

For average users it's also somehow more personal. Most people didn't add people they knew IRL, so it became a real community with other users who shared those interests.

I think users are having those needs met by Twitter and Reddit now though. Visiting Tumblr feels like visiting MySpace now and there's so much less engagement than there used to be. Pretty sure this is its death spiral and yet another failure for Yahoo.

Tumblr is really only used for porn or someone bitching about an injustice.

I use Tumblr to mindlessly scroll through pictures, that's it. Whole site is full of those sarcastic asshole types and the anonymous message feature has to be one of the worst things I've ever encountered online - people found out I had a blog with anons turned on and sent me some pretty gross abuse :tear:
    Also p0rn...

tumblr is used for small personal blogging in a specific group of people (mostly younger, more alternative teens and young adults). some of the things people used tumblr for made no sense on the platform

I still post my artwork and writing to my tumblr even though nobody sees it/likes it. Other than Instagram, I just don't know where else to share it

I made some great friends on tumblr tbh, mostly I just used it to reblog others pictures and talk to people.

    Now, porn.

The only use I had for it (outside of following blink-182 when they were active on there) was for my college portfolio class where we had to create our own "professional" website, and tumblr was the easy option to choose from.

Other than that, I find no use for the website.
