It’s almost like the entire storyline of s1 is themed around toxic masculinity huh

And in series 1 they mention that Rust spent time in Alaska.

I really liked this episode! Slow, sure, but i don’t mind a first few slow episodes. Had some of the dumb philosophical one-liners and mystic shit i loved for me to keep tuning in.

Rewatched it with my girlfriend and outside of some clunky dialogue (the fantasy footballs lines, woof) I still think it's a good introduction episode. It's definitely pulling from a lot of other stuff which I don't mind.

Seeing people theorize that the ghost dude Travis in the first episode is Rust Cohle’s dead father.

The first season is one of the best seasons of television ever and that’s in large part because it’s 25% Dumb as fuck.

The first season was 100% carried by McConaughey putting on the performance of his life and the chemistry he and Woody had, plus some episode that had some fantastic cinematography.

The actual murder plot though made no sense and completely fell apart in the third act

S1 is pretty dang good overall but I was also expecting some paranormal or cosmic horror shit to happen but it never did and that kinda bummed me out and lowered my expectations going forward with this series.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

yea the villain of s1 being every hilbilly killer trope thrown in a blender was the most crushing disappointment to me lol. how do we let the audience know he's evil! yeah he fucks his sister and she's Ann Dowd, that'll do. Carcosa was just some rooms with sticks n shit

s3 had the best payoff by far but no-one's ready for that conversation

can you expand on this? I only just watched season 1 so curious what you mean about it falling apart and not making sense and stuff

The post above your's pretty much says it. They mention this vast wide conspiracy involving the most powerful people in Louisiana as the hook, but they never actually show any of that. In the end it's his some backwoods inbred Hills Have No Eyes people. I left still wanting to know more about this murder cult and kind of disappointed in the payoff.

Again that is fine though because I realize the season was actually about the relationship between the two cops more than the actual occult murder stuff.

On rewatch I appreciated the ending a little more. It was too deep for two well meaning cops but they tried to take comfort in getting “their guy”
I still get a little annoyed with Rust’s diatribes like he just picked up an intro to philosophy book and some new atheist stuff but he’s a great character otherwise

My understanding of it was the Tuttle family that was running the cult had all basically died off at that point with the exception of the senator, and he denied having any knowledge. And Childress wasn't a rando but was the son of the bastard son of the Tuttle patriarch. It seemed like the cult itself had more or less fallen apart by that point, especially with the death of Billy Lee, but still had people in high places who either knew or partook and benefitted from keeping it covered up and discrediting/denying the evidence Cohle and Hart had found. Like maybe I missed it but it seemed like the cult itself was defunct by the time we got to 2012 and Childress was mostly just carrying it on because he grew up with it and knew nothing else and was insane. Like probably convinced himself he was carrying on the legacy of the family/yellow king or whatever.

BUT yes I also was disappointed that it became like a "well got the guy, just not the whole thing" and we didn't get it as exposed as I wanted it to be. I too was interested in knowing more hah

It's been meme'd to death now but I still died at the "i just want you to stop saying odd shit"/"I don't sleep, I dream" *death stare* combo lmao

I loved the ending of season 1. Not once did I ever think it was going to get supernatural and I'm glad it didn't.

There's an arugment to make that it did get at least a LITTLE super natural....The dude they originally thought did it that they killed told Cohle he "saw him in his dreams" or something like that and then Childress also was talking to him like he knew who he was/expected him to come eventually. And then that vision Cohle has induced the by the drugs during the final fight looks like it could have been inspired by the descriptions of what "Carcosa" was supposed to be. Like alluding to the sacrifice of Cohle was gonna open up the portal to that world or whatever.
