I got emotionally walloped by an episode of The Americans today, so I’m going to watch this tomorrow when my reserves have been built back up a bit. I hope my fears about it will be wrong!
Same. Very disappointed and my eyes were rolling the whole time. What a lame way to wrap up a great season.
I’m glad I’ll have tempered expectations then. I wish I could have placed a bet on them dropping the ball, that would have made the experience more pleasurable, lol.
That was one of the most disappointing finales I’ve seen in a while. Shame. Stephen Dorff and Mahershala were both incredible and hopefully this reignites Dorff’s career. But what that amounted to was a more drawn out version of Gone Baby Gone. Too bad Michelle Monaghan didn’t get an advance script.
The performances were as good as ever, I’ll give them that. That dog scene was laughably cheesy though, woof. Literally.
Definitely lacked the punch I was hoping for. Agree that with all the threads out there they took the weakest & most straightforward approach
Props to Ali and Dorff for their performances, but this season was a fucking slog from beginning to end. C+, glad it’s over.
I think thats my biggest takeaway, as it all unfolded i literally just said “oh...”. Disappointing first half reveal but i did actually like the wayne/julie scene even though i was sitting there the whole time like AREEE YOU KIDDDDINNNGG MEEEEEE lol
Overall meh ending to what was otherwise a good season. Not sure if i hyped it up to more than it was or if it really did let me down. Probably somewhere inbetween.
Wow. I was not expecting to be that let down. There was a lot of stuff that I enjoyed in that episode, but I have to say there was equally as much stuff that was just really silly and cheesy and poorly done. Overall for this season, the acting was absolutely incredible, across the boards with the leads. Mahershala Ali was absolutely phenomenal. Steven Dorff was fantastic and I think he ended up being my favorite character. Carmen Ejogo was amazing. Scoot McMcnairy's character ended up being pretty damn heartbreaking. Nic Pizzolatto can be a very good writer, but there's a good chance I won't even watch Season 4 (if they make it) unless they have a strong director - who is willing to battle it out with Pizzolatto during production - direct the entire season. He needs the director in there shaping how the whole season / story is going to play out with him. Otherwise he can go write a fucking novel or something. The mystery ended up not being that important, but the whole thing was structured like a bad mystery where they teased us with red herrings and played too coy by half with information the entire time. This was more of a drama or a character study but it wasn't written or structured as one. Definitely a step up from Season 2, but not even in the same ballpark as Season 1. I don't think it was a waste of time by any means, and I do not regret watching it, but there are just so many amazing shows coming out right now that are firing on all cylinders and just doing everything right, that I'm not sure I'll keep making time for one that does so many things so right but continues to keep doing so many things so wrong. And what the fuck was up with that final shot of Purple Hays in the jungle in Vietnam…??? Why the hell was that shot there?!?!?!??
I think the shot was meant to signify him going into the "wilderness" and by the end of his life, finally found some clarity. I don't know, I loved the finale. I thought it was amazing.
The final shot was actually the part i liked best about the finale. I can’t explain why, but i feel like it just capped the season in a way that I think worked aesthetically. I think that the season definitely ended with the most straightforward and easiest exit. It could have been a more powerful episode, but it didn’t bother me as much as it seems to have bothered others in this thread. But i really enjoyed watching this season. The writing was middle of the road, but the performances (obviously) and the cinematography were both great imo. I give the whole thing a B, definitely helped renew my faith in the project. I’d check out a season 4.
Lol the whole exchange between 2015 hays/west ”we have an ending...do you feel closure? ......no.....me neither.” was very on the nose lol
Someone on tweeter said we arent supposed to have closure bc hays never will either, even if he remembered julie and why he was there who knows if hed even remember it later that day, he’ll probably always be wondering and i thought that was an interesting view.
*Hays pulls up to Julie's house* Me: "Please don't tell me he has a dementia moment right now." Hays: "What am I doing here again?" Me: "JESUS FUCKING CHRIST."
I think it all came back when he drank that water, he was just done with the case once he knew she was safe and happy.
I won’t be able to watch for just a bit, but this is almost word for word what my worst fear has been that I’ve been saying for weeks. I should have trusted my gut about this jabroni from the start. Ugh.
